Comparison of three brown coal regions in Central Europe

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se zaměřuje na komparaci tří hnědouhelných regionů střední Evropy: Horní Jiřetín v České republice, Nochten v Německu a Konin v Polsku. Cílem je analyzovat vybrané geografické a socioekonomické charakteristiky a hodnotit klimatickou zranitelnost těchto území. V teoretické části je kladen důraz na koncept klimatické zranitelnosti a dopady těžby hnědého uhlí na životní prostředí a obyvatelstvo. Autor se také věnuje politikám a strategiím, které řeší dopady těžby a transformaci těžebních oblastí. Pro komparaci jsou využita sekundární data z veřejně dostupných zdrojů, včetně statistických úřadů, environmentálních databází a publikovaných dat od klíčových aktérů. Na základě těchto dat je provedena komparace s důrazem na klimatickou zranitelnost území. V závěrečné části práce jsou shrnuta hlavní zjištění. Je zkoumán dopad těžby na obyvatelstvo a krajinu, včetně zničení obcí a přesídlení obyvatel. Pozornost je věnována také ekonomickým dopadům, které měly pozitivní dopad na prosperitu regionu. Zkoumána je změna přístupu k těžbě a k dopadům na krajinu a sociální strukturu obyvatel, která se za poslední roky zlepšuje. V práci je zkoumán politický kontext těžby, ve kterém je shrnuta budoucnost vybraných hnědouhelných regionů, která zahrnuje především podporu rekreačních aktivit.

Abstract:

The bachelor thesis focuses on the comparison of three brown coal regions in Central Europe: Horní Jiřetín in the Czech Republic, Nochten in Germany and Konin in Poland. Main goal is to analyse selected geographical and socio-economic characteristics and to assess the climatic vulnerability of these areas. The theoretical part focuses on the concept of climate vulnerability and the impacts of lignite mining on the environment and population. The author also discusses policies and strategies that address the impacts of mining and the transformation of mining areas. Secondary data from publicly available sources, including statistical offices, environmental databases, and published data from key actors are used for comparison. Based on these data, the comparison is made with an emphasis on the climatic vulnerability of the area. The final section of the thesis summarises the main findings. The impact of mining on the population and landscape is examined, including the destruction of villages and the displacement of people. Attention is also paid to the economic impacts that have had a positive impact on the prosperity of the region. Changing attitudes towards mining and the impact on the landscape and the social fabric of the population, which has been improving in recent years, are examined. The political context of mining is examined, summarising the future of the selected brown coal regions, which includes in particular the promotion of recreational activities.
