The interwar typography as a specific tool of modernist ideology

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá meziválečnou typografií ve vztahu k dobovým modernistickým teoriím a nastalým změnám ve vnímání vizuální komunikace jako takové. Představitelé hnutí takzvané nové typografie přišli ve dvacátých letech s řadou velice odvážných myšlenek, které se rozhodli uplatnit v praxi. Jejich počínání bylo doprovázeno nebývale čilou teoretickou činností a jedním z hlavních motivů prosazovaných teorií se stalo užívání bezserifového písma jako ideálního nástroje efektivní vizuální komunikace. Tento text sleduje vývoj bezserifových písem od devatenáctého století, ale hlavně pak stěžejní teoretické práce a praktické realizace avantgardních designerů meziválečného období. Pozornost je věnována také některým konkrétním písmovým sadám a jejich tvůrcům, přičemž nechybí ani popis jakéhosi zvratu v průběhu třicátých let a následného poválečného dění.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with the interwar typography in relation to the modernist theories of the period and abrupt changes in the perception of visual communication as such. Representatives of the so-called New Typography movement came in the twenties with a number of very bold ideas that have decided to apply in practice. Their behavior was accompanied by an unusually brisk theoretical activity and one of the main themes of promoted theories became using of sans serif fonts as the ideal instrument of effective visual communication. The text follows the development of sans serif fonts since the nineteenth century, but especially the crucial theoretical work and practical implementation of avant-garde designers of the interwar period. Attention is also paid to some specific quality font sets and their creators, while there is also a description of some reversal during the thirties and the subsequent post-war events.
