The Perception of Needs and Support of Parents of Hospitalised Children

Abstract:

Cíl: Cílem této práce bylo zjistit potřeby rodičů hospitalizovaných dětí. Zjistit míru vnímané podpory rodičů hospitalizovaných dětí poskytovanou sestrami a zjistit, zda má úroveň podpory vliv na preferenci potřeb rodičů. Metodika: Výzkumný soubor tvořilo 248 rodičů dětí ve věku 3-11 let hospitalizovaných ve Fakultní nemocnici Ostrava, Městské nemocnici Ostrava a Vítkovické nemocnici. Ve výzkumu byly použity 3 standardizované dotazníky: Needs of Parents Questionnaire, The Nurse Parent Support Tool a Child Parent Relationship Scale. Výsledky: Z výsledků výzkumu vyplynulo, že pro ženy, rodiče mladší 20 let a rodiče poprvé hospitalizovaných dětí, byly jednotlivé potřeby více důležité. V rámci podpory rodičů ze strany sester bylo zjištěno, že rodiče mladší 20 let, rodiče se základním vzděláním či rodiče mladších dětí hodnotili podporu sestrami negativněji. Zvyšovala-li se podpora rodičů ze strany sester, rostla zároveň i důležitost některých potřeb rodičů. Zde však byla nalezena pouze slabá souvislost. Vzrůstal-li negativní vztah rodičů k dítěti, preference potřeb rodičů klesala. Naopak lepší a bližší vztah rodičů k dítěti vedl k vyšší preferenci jejich vlastních potřeb. Závěr: Preferenci potřeb rodičů může ovlivňovat podpora ze stran sester či vlastní vztah rodičů k dítěti. Sestry, které s rodiči hospitalizovaných dětí spolupracují, by měly projevit zájem o potřeby rodičů či jim pomoci v jejich saturaci. Neměly by také zapomínat na podporu rodičů, protože spokojený rodič bude pro své dítě daleko větší oporou.

Abstract:

Aim: The aim of this work was to determine the needs of parents of hospitalized children, to define the level of perceived support to parents of hospitalized children provided by nurses, and to find whether the level of support influences parents' preferences of their needs. Method: The research sample consisted of 248 parents of children aged 3 to 11 hospitalized at the University Hospital Ostrava, City Hospital Ostrava and Vítkovice Hospital. In the study three standardized questionnaires were used: Needs of Parents Questionnaire, The Nurse Parent Support Tool and Child Parent Relationship Scale. Results: The research showed that women, parents younger than 20 years of age and parents of children who were hospitalized for the first time attached higher importance to the individual needs. As regards nurses' support of parents, it was found that parents below 20, parents with primary education or parents of younger children evaluated nurses' support more negatively. If nurses' support increased, the importance of individual needs for parents increased as well. Here only a weak correlation was observed, however. If a negative attitude of parents towards the child grew, the preference of their needs decreased. Conversely, the better and closer relationship parents had with their child, the more the preferences of their individual needs grew. Conclusion: Preferences of parents' needs are influenced by the support of the nurses or the parents' relationship with the child. Nurses who cooperate with parents of hospitalized children should be interested in the needs of the parents and possibly help them in their saturation. They should also not ignore the support of parents since a happy parent will be a far greater support for the child.
