Strategic Analysis of a Family Business

Abstract:

Hlavním cílem této bakalářské práce bylo identifikovat příležitosti, hrozby, silné a slabé stránky rodinné firmy prostřednictvím strategické analýzy. Druhým cílem bylo ověřit za pomoci kvalitativních rozhovorů a dotazníků, zda a jak se rodinný podnik vyznačuje určitými znaky a vlastnostmi, které jsou specifické pro rodinné podnikání. Práce je strukturována na část teoreticko-metodologickou a praktickou. První část práce se věnuje oblasti rodinného podnikání a unikátním aspektům, kterými se rodinné firmy vyznačují. Dále jsou představeny pojmy a metody použité v strategické analýze a je také vysvětlena metodologie kvalitativních rozhovorů. Na úvod praktické části je představen analyzovaný rodinný podnik – IHL TRANSPORT s.r.o. včetně jeho podnikatelské činnosti a organizační struktury. Následně je provedena analýza vnějšího a vnitřního prostředí podniku. V rámci analýzy vnějšího prostředí jsou použity metody PESTEL a Porterova analýza 5 sil. Analýza vnitřního prostředí se skládá z VRIO analýzy a finanční analýzy. Dále je pozornost směřována na unikátní vlastnosti a chování rodinné firmy. Konkrétně jsou analyzovány aspekty – socioemocionální bohatství, rodinný sociální kapitál, dlouhodobá orientace, averze vůči využívání cizího kapitálu, společenská odpovědnost a nástupnictví. Výstupy ze strategické analýzy a ověřování aspektů rodinného podniku jsou propojeny prostřednictvím SWOT analýzy, kde jsou navíc vyhodnoceny vzájemné vazby. Příležitosti, hrozby, silné a slabé stránky podniku se podařilo úspěšně identifikovat. Z hlediska rodinných aspektů bylo potvrzeno, že podnik sleduje i neekonomické cíle jako je soudržnost rodin, rodinná spokojenost skrze podnik a zachování rodinné dynastie v podnikání. Navíc ve firmě působí silný rodinný sociální kapitál a podnik je řízen dlouhodobými strategiemi zohledňující dlouhodobé cíle a alokaci zdrojů. Přínosem práce jsou strategická zjištění a doporučení pro management podniku.

Abstract:

The main aim of this bachelor thesis was to identify opportunities, threats, strengths and weaknesses of the family business through strategic analysis. The second objective was to verify with the help of qualitative interviews and questionnaires whether the family business is characterized by certain features and characteristics that are specific to family business. The thesis is structured into theoretical-methodological and practical part. The first part of the thesis deals with the area of family business and the unique aspects that characterize family businesses. Furthermore, the concepts and tools used in the strategic analysis are introduced and the methodology of qualitative interviews is explained as well. At the beginning of the practical part is introduced the analysed family business - IHL TRANSPORT s.r.o. including an explanation of its business activities and organizational structure. Subsequently, an analysis of the external and internal environment of the company is carried out. The tools PESTEL and Porter's analysis of 5 forces are used in the analysis of the external environment. The analysis of the internal environment consists of VRIO analysis and financial analysis. Besides that, attention is focused on the unique characteristics and behaviour of the family business. Specifically, these aspects were analysed - socio-emotional wealth, family social capital, long-term orientation, aversion to the use of debt financing, corporate social responsibility, and succession. The outputs from the strategic analysis and the analysis of aspects of family business are connected by means of SWOT analysis, where their mutual relations are evaluated. The opportunities, threats, strengths and weaknesses of the company were successfully identified. In terms of family aspects, it was confirmed that the company also pursues non-economic goals such as family cohesion, family satisfaction through the company and maintaining the family dynasty in business. In addition, the company has strong family social capital, and the company is managed by long-term strategies that consider long-term goals and resource allocation. The contribution of this work are strategic findings and recommendations for business management.
