Role Play in Upper Primary Classes

Abstract:

This diploma thesis deals with role play which is one of the techniques of the Communicative Approach. The theoretical part describes general aspects concerning the importance of developing communicative ability according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. The individual chapters analyse role play, its characteristics, the reasons for using it, the types of role play, its process, giving feedback and the role of the teacher during role play. The practical part includes the methodology of six role plays which were designed for pupils at upper primary school. The aim of this work was to compare the ideas studied in literature with the results after piloting the role plays at school. The questionnaire shows the pupils’ attitude to role play.
