Building pluricultural repertoire in upper-secondary EFL classroom

Abstract:

Práce se zabývá problematikou výuky reálií, rozvoje interkulturní kompetence (IK) a budování širokého kulturního (plurikulturního) repertoáru ve výuce anglického jazyka na českých středních školách. Má-li člověk v dnešním, stále propojenějším, světě uspět sociálně, profesně i osobně, musí se umět pohybovat v prostředí, kde se setkává s lidmi z nejrůznějších prostředí. Plurikulturní repertoár je nutný nejen proto, abychom chápali jiné postoje, ale i proto, abychom jinakost dokázali skutečně respektovat, nikoli jen tolerovat. Výuka angličtiny, mezinárodního dorozumívacího jazyka, by mohla být ideální příležitostí k budování tohoto repertoáru, ale často tak tomu bohužel není. Kultura, se kterou se žáci ve výuce seznamují, bývá zhusta redukována na kulturu britskou a americkou. Toto pojetí je často podporováno i obsahem učebnic, které mnohdy jako by popíraly skutečnost, že je angličtina mezinárodní jazykn. Práce ukazuje, že toto není problém pouze v České republice, ale i jinde. Dalším problémem, opět nikoli výhradně českým, je otázka výuky jako takové, kdy stále často dochází k pouhému předávání informací namísto konstruování vědění. Cílem této práce tak bylo navrhnout dvě výukové sady řešící právě tyto problémy. Text nejdříve stručně seznamuje s teoretickým základem nutným pro pochopení vzájemného propojení mezi kulturou, výukou jazyka, interkulturní kompetencí a interkulturním vzděláváním a osvětluje, jak může angličtina sloužit k budování širokého kulturního repertoáru. Po představení základních konceptů v této oblasti, tedy kultury, interkulturality, interkulturního vzdělávání, angličtiny jako mezinárodní jazyk (EIL) a plurikulturality, je stanoven výzkumný problém. Je jím nedostatek materiálů zaměřujících se na rozvoj interkulturní kompetence a budování plurikulturního repertoáru, rezervovaný přístup učitelů angličtiny k výuce reálií jiných nežli britských či amerických a netransmisivní metody výuky. Pro práci byla zvolena metoda konstrukčního výzkumu (design-based reseach): navržené výukové sety byly otestovány, vyhodnoceny a upraveny. V rámci práce byl dokončen pouze jeden cyklus testování a sety bude třeba dále ladit, avšak už v této fázi mohou posloužit jako inspirace k tomu, jak v rámci výuky angličtiny neposilovat pouze jazykovou kompetenci, ale také kompetence mezikulturní a plurikulturní, tedy kompetence tolik potřebné k tomu, aby se lidé uměli v dnešním globalizovaném světě pohybovat nejen sebejistě, ale také s citlivostí.

Abstract:

The thesis deals with the topic of teaching culture, developing intercultural competence (IC) and building a pluricultural repertoire in English classes in Czech upper-secondary schools. In today’s increasingly interconnected world, the ability to navigate and manage multiple intercultural encounters is essential for individuals to thrive in diverse social, professional, and personal contexts. Building a pluricultural repertoire, or the capacity to interact effectively with people from different cultural backgrounds, is crucial for fostering mutual understanding, respect, and collaboration across cultural boundaries. With English being today’s lingua franca, the EFL classroom provides an ideal environment for building the pluricultural repertoire. However, despite the potential of English classes to be the environment conducive to the growth and development of pluriculturality, culture taught within English classes in schools – both in Czechia and abroad – is very often narrowed down to British and US culture, an approach often supported by course materials that seem to deny the reality of English as an International Language. Furthermore, EFL classroom practice often tends towards transmitting information rather than facilitating construction of knowledge. The aim of this bachelor’s thesis was to design two instructional sets addressing the problems encountered in EFL.Initially, the theoretical foundations are presented to provide a comprehensive framework for understanding the interplay between culture, language teaching, intercultural competence and education, and building a pluricultural repertoire. After explaining the fundamental concepts of culture, interculturality, intercultural education, English as an International Language (EIL), and pluriculturalism, the focus shifts to identifying the three problems to be addressed: scarcity of materials with a potential to develop intercultural competence and build a pluricultural repertoire; reserved attitudes of EFL teachers towards teaching content unrelated to English-speaking countries; and prevailing use of transmissive, rather than constructivist classroom practices. The methodology employed to rectify the issues is the design-based approach: two instructional sets were designed, tested, evaluated and refined. While only one iteration of testing had been completed by the time of this thesis submission, thus not allowing for fine-tuning the instructional sets, the author believes they could serve as an inspiration for exploring avenues to transform the EFL classroom into a space where students not only acquire language skills but also cultivate the intercultural agility necessary to navigate today’s globalized world with confidence and sensitivity.
