Stigmatization and the impact of autism spectrum disorders in children and adolescents on family life.

Abstract:

The master's thesis deals with the stigmatization of autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and the impact of this diagnosis on various areas of life of parents and siblings of children with ASD, as well as on the children themselves. Children and adolescents with ASD and their families often experience social misunderstanding, rejection, negative prejudice, isolation and various emotional reactions associated with public and associational stigmatization. In the theoretical part, we defined terms such as autism spectrum disorders, their etiology, differential diagnosis and various symptoms. Furthermore, we focus on stigmatization and its different types, on coping strategies, and we try to clarify what effects the diagnosis of ASD and its stigmatization can have on various areas of the lives of parents and children. In the research part, we use a qualitative method in the form of case studies and through semi-structured interviews, the transcripts of which are subsequently analyzed and sorted into categories in accordance with the theoretical part of the work, we find out the acceptance of the diagnosis of ASD by parents, the impact on their relationships, the occurrence of stigmatization and negative reactions from society, the situation in the education of a child with ASD and finally we focus on support and coping strategies.

Magisterská diplomová práca sa zaoberá stigmatizáciou porúch autistického spektra (PAS) a vplyvom tejto diagnózy na rôzne oblasti života rodičov a súrodencov detí s PAS, ale aj na samotné deti. Deti a dospievajúci s PAS a ich rodiny často pociťujú sociálne nepochopenie, odmietnutie, negatívne predsudky, izoláciu a rôzne emocionálne reakcie spojené s verejnou a asociačnou stigmatizáciou. V teoretickej časti sme vymedzili pojmy ako poruchy autistického spektra, ich etiológiu, diferenciálnu diagnostiku a rôznorodé príznaky. Ďalej sa zameriavame na stigmatizáciu a jej rôzne typy, na stratégie jej zvládania a napokon sa snažíme ozrejmiť, aké vplyvy môže mať diagnóza PAS a jej stigmatizácia na rôzne oblasti života rodičov a detí. V rámci výskumnej časti využívame kvalitatívnu metódu formou kazuistík a prostredníctvom pološtruktúrovaných rozhovorov, ktorých prepisy sú následne analyzované a roztriedené do kategórií v súlade s teoretickou časťou práce, zisťujeme prijatie diagnózy PAS rodičmi, vplyv na ich vzťahy, výskyt stigmatizácie a negatívnych reakcií od okolia, situáciu v školstve dieťaťa s PAS a napokon sa zameriavame na podporu a stratégie zvládania.
