Consumer or consumer product? The influence of the rise of the middle class on the status of women in modern China

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá postavením čínských žen v konfuciánské, maoistické a moderní Číně, vzestupem střední třídy a s tím spojeným rozmachem konzumní společnosti, pozicí žen v tomto systému a také problémy, které jsou důsledkem této situace. Práce představuje základní faktory, které status žen v Číně ovlivňují. Práce je rozdělena na tři části, kdy první představuje kulturní a historický kontext během vlády dynastie Východní Han, tedy 1. století n. l., druhá část období během a po vzniku Čínské lidové republiky a poslední popisuje situaci od 80. let 20. století do současnosti. Druhá kapitola charakterizuje konzumerismus a zabývá se fenoménem „leftover women“. Třetí část je věnována vybraným socioekonomickým problémům, které jsou s posilováním střední třídy spojeny. Práce prokazuje, že ženy jsou konzumní společnosti ovlivněny ve velkém, svým způsobem života ji ovšem také silně utvářejí.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis focuses on position of women in confucian, maoist and modern China, the rise of the middle class and the expansion of consumer society, position of women within this system and consequences of this situation. Thesis introduces basic factors influencing the position of women in China. Thesis is divided into three parts, where first deals with culture and historic context during the reign of the Western Han dynasty in the 1st century AD. Second part deals with the era of founding the People’s Republic of China and the last one characterizes the modern China from 1980s. Second chapter describes consumption and deals with the phenomenon of “leftover women”. Last chapter focuses on chosen socioeconomic consequences, that are connected with the rise of the middle class. The goal of this thesis is to show, that women are both consumer and consumer product.
