The influence of social support on the ability to manage a stressful situation in a pet rabbit

Abstract:

Welfare králíků chovaných v zájmových chovech je stále častěji diskutovaným tématem. Přestože se jedná o velmi společenská zvířata, je stále velká část z nich chována individuálně, přitom sociální partner může hrát zásadní roli právě na welfare chovaných králíků. Ze studií zabývajících se vlivem sociální podpory vyplývá, že pozitivní sociální interakce se sociálními partnery, mohou účinně zvýšit schopnost jedince vyrovnat se s náročnými situacemi (DeVries et al. 2003). Účinky jsou známé u celé řady savců (včetně lidí), ale také ptáků a mají potenciál zlepšovat zdraví i pohodu jedince. Z dlouhodobého hlediska mohou zvýšit individuální odolnost králíků (Rödel & Starkloff 2014). Tato práce se zaměřuje na vliv sociálního partnera během působení krátkodobého stresoru (neznámé prostředí). Během experimentu jsme se zaměřili na porovnání chování králíků během stresové situace individuálně a ve dvojici. Do pokusu bylo zahrnuto 8 samic králíka domácího, všechny samice byly zvyklé na běžnou manipulaci, abychom předešli zkreslení výsledků manipulací s nimi. Hlavní hypotéza je zaměřena na to, zda individuálně testovaní králíci projevují více známek stresového chování. Sledována byla frekvence exploračního chování včetně čichání a panáčkování, dále grooming, míra lokomoce a způsob pohybu. Ukázalo se, že individuálně testovaní králíci vykazovali více známek nepohody, zvýšená pohybová i explorační aktivita a pohyb mimo střed arény. Náhodně byla také objevena možná souvislost velikosti těla na stresovou reakci. Poslední hypotéza se zabývá projevy pohody. Za projev pohody během open field testu je považována relaxace (uvolněné ležení), které jsme předpokládali u králíků testovaných ve dvojici. Kvůli nízkému počtu opakování tohoto chování, ale nebylo možné jej statisticky analyzovat a hypotézu potvrdit či vyvrátit. Cílem práce bylo prokázání vlivu sociálního partnera. Prokázání vlivu sociální podpory by mohlo pomoci zlepšit welfare chovaných králíků.

Abstract:

The welfare of rabbits kept in hobby farms is an increasingly frequently discussed topic. Although these are very social animals, a large part of them are still kept individually, while the social partner can play a vital role in the welfare of the rabbits. Studies dealing with the influence of social support show that positive social interactions with social partners can effectively increase an individual's ability to cope with challenging situations (DeVries et al. 2003). The effects are known in a wide range of mammals (including humans), but also in birds, and have the potential to improve individual health and well-being. In the long term, they can increase the individual resistance of rabbits (Rödel & Starkloff 2014). This work focuses on the influence of the social partner during a short-term stressor (isolation in a unknown environment). During the experiment, we focused on comparing the behavior of rabbits during a stressful situation individually and in pairs. 8 female domestic rabbits were included in the experiment, all females were accustomed to normal handling to avoid biasing the results by handling them. The main hypothesis focused on whether individually tested rabbits show more signs of stress behavior (grooming, more exploration behaviour) he frequency of exploratory behavior was monitored, including sniffing and panting, as well as grooming, the degree of locomotion and the way of movement. Individually tested rabbits showed more signs of discomfort, increased locomotor and exploratory activity. A possible link of body size to stress response was also discovered serendipitously. The last hypothesis (Rabbits exposed to a stressful situation in pairs show more signs of relaxed behavior – relaxation, resting/lying down than rabbits tested individually.) deals with manifestations of well-being. A manifestation of well-being during the open field test is considered relaxation (relaxed lying down), which we assumed for rabbits tested in pairs. Due to the low number of repetitions of this behavior, it was not possible to statistically analyze it and confirm or refute the hypothesis. The aim of the work was to verify the positive influence of a social partner on the ability to manage a stressful situation. Demonstrating the influence of a social partner could help improve the welfare of farmed rabbits.
