Development of Russian-Chinese relations: allies or rivals?

Abstract:

Cílem této bakalářské práce bylo zmapovat vztahy mezi Čínou a Ruskem v období od roku 1991 až 2018 a následně posoudit, zda se jedná spíše o rivaly, nebo spojence. V práci jsou tedy charakterizovány jak sféry spolupráce, tak sféry, kde by se mělo jednat spíše o střet zájmu mezi státy. Na základě získaných informací je možné usoudit, že v rusko-čínských vztazích převažuje v současné době spíše spolupráce než rivalita, protože i ve sférách, které se mohou jevit spíše jako konfliktní, jsou jejich vztahy stabilní. Výrazný vliv jak na rivalitu, tak na spolupráci mezi danými státy měla takzvaná Ukrajinská krize z roku 2014, protože díky zhoršení vztahu Ruska se Západem bylo Rusko nuceno se přeorientovat jak politiky, tak ekonomicky směrem k Číně. Jejich spolupráce se začala tímto více prohlubovat, nicméně společně s asymetrickou závislostí Ruska na Číně. Rusko totiž v současné době potřebuje Čínu více než dříve, proto má tendenci i v oblastech, které by se mohly jevit spíše jako konfliktní (oblast Střední Asie, ruský Dálný východ, oblast Arktidy) Číně ustupovat a rivalita je v takovýchto oblastech, jako ve všech ostatních, také upozaďována na úkor spolupráce.

Abstract:

The aim of this bachelor thesis was to investigate relations between China and Russia during the period from 1991 to 2018 and then to assess whether it is more about rivals or allies. The thesis characterizes the sphere of cooperation and the sphere where it should be conflict of interest between states. Based on the information obtained, it can be concluded that in Russian-Chinese relations there is currently more cooperation than rivalry, because even in spheres that may seem more conflict, their relationships are stable. The so-called Ukrainian Crisis of 2014 has had a significant impact on both rivalry and cooperation between states, because Russia has been forced to reorient both political and economical spheres towards China thanks to the worsening of Russia's relationship with the West. Their collaboration has begun to deepen, but with asymmetric dependence of Russia on China. Russia is currently in need of China more than before, so it has a tendency even in areas that might appeal to be conflict (Central Asia, the Russian Far East, the Arctic region), and the rivalry is being pushed away in such areas at the expense of cooperation.
