Selected aspects of self-concept and their relationship to the perceived styles of family education in adolescents.

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá souvislostmi mezi dvěma aspekty sebepojetí - self-esteem a body-esteem - a vnímanou výchovou v rodině u dospívajících chlapců a dívek. Teoretická část se věnuje problematice sebepojetí a jeho vybraným aspektům, adolescenci a rodinné výchově, a uvádí přehled aktuálních poznatků s důrazem na syntézu uvedených témat. Empirická část popisuje průběh a výsledky vlastního šetření. Výzkumný soubor tvořilo 150 studentů střední školy, 59 žen a 91 mužů, ve věku od 15 do 21 let. Studentům byly administrovány tři dotazníkové metody: Rosenberg Self-esteem Scale, The Physical Self Perception Profile a dotazník ADOR. Na základě statistické analýzy získaných dat pak byla zjištěna řada signifikantních vztahů. Potvrdila se provázanost míry self-esteem a body-esteem a jejich vyšší míra u chlapců. V kontextu výchovy byla zjištěna souvislost hostilních projevů a nedůslednosti s nižším self-esteem, u dívek pak i s nižším body-esteem. Vnímaná pozitivita ve výchově korelovala pozitivně se self-esteem chlapců a s body-esteem dívek. Souvislost míry výchovné kontroly se sebepojetím adolescentů se neprokázala.

Abstract:

The diploma thesis looks into the relationships between two aspects of self-concept - self-esteem and body-esteem - and the perceived styles of family education in adolescent boys and girls. The theoretical part deals with the topic of self-concept and its selected aspects, adolescence and family education, and provides an overview of current knowledge with an emphasis on the synthesis of the above topics. The empirical part then describes the research process and its results. The research group consisted of 150 high school students, including 59 women and 91 men, aged 15-21. Three questionnaire methods were administered to the students: the Rosenberg Self-esteem Scale, The Physical Self-Perception Profile and the ADOR questionnaire. Based on a statistical analysis of the obtained data, a number of significant relationships were found. The interdependence of self-esteem and body-esteem was confirmed with the male group scoring higher in both scales. In the context of family education, hostility and inconsistency correlated with lower self-esteem, in the female group with lower body-esteem as well. Perceived positivity in parents’ behaviour correlated positively with self-esteem of boys and body-esteem of girls. The relationship between the level of parental control and the self-concept of adolescents has not been proven.
