ESL Teaching using Authentic Materials: Impact of English TV Series on Motivation and Skills in Czech Upper-Secondary Students

Abstract:

Tato práce se zaměřuje na využití seriálů jako autentických materiálů při výuce an-glického jazyka na středních školách. Práce zkoumá dva aspekty, zaprvé to, jak seriá-ly ovlivňují motivaci studentů k učení a zadruhé, jejich vlivem na rozvoj jazykových dovedností a znalostí těchto žáků. Tato práce se zaměřila na rozvoj poslechových do-vedností a znalostí gramatiky. V první části práce jsou definovány pojmy autentické materiály a motivace. V kapitole jsou dále objasněna další teoretická východiska tý-kající se zkoumaného tématu. V praktické části pak na základě výsledků akčního vý-zkumu (action research), která proběhla mezi žáky české střední školy, práce zodpo-vídá, do jaké míry použití zvoleného autentického materiálu ovlivnilo, jak motivaci žáků učit se anglicky, tak zda měla využitá metoda vliv na zlepšení jazykových znalos-tí a dovedností žáků v oblasti poslechu a gramatiky.

Abstract:

This thesis explores the use of TV series as authentic materials in English language teaching in secondary schools. The thesis examines two aspects, firstly, how the se-ries affect students' motivation to learn and secondly, their impact on the develop-ment of language skills and knowledge of these learners. This thesis focused on the development of listening skills and knowledge of grammar. In the first part of the the-sis, terms like authentic materials and motivation are defined. Further theoretical background related to the researched topic is also explained in the first chapter. In the practical part, based on the results of action research conducted among Czech secondary school students, the thesis answers to what extent the use of the chosen authentic material influenced both the students’ motivation to learn English and whether the method used had an impact on improving the students’ listening skills and knowledge of grammar.
