Multifunctional Use of Discourse Markers in US Presidential Debates of 2016

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá použitím diskurzivních ukazatelů (discourse markers) v kontextu amerických prezidentských debat z roku 2016. Práce čtenáře seznamuje s žánrem politické debaty, poukazuje na specifika žánru a poskytuje základní informace o zkoumané debatě a jejích aktérech. Teoretická část se pak dále zabývá obecnou charakteristikou diskurzivních ukazatelů, vysvětluje problematiku terminologie a poskytuje seznam některých z mnoha funkcí, jež jsou pro většinu markerů typické. V rámci analytické části práce je aplikován koherenční přístup. Tento přístup analyzuje diskurzivní markery jako syntakticky odlučitelné výrazy, jejichž hlavním posláním je zajištění jazykové koherence v mluveném projevu. Cílem této práce je poskytnout kvalitativní výzkum role a použití jednotlivých markerů v rámci zkoumaného diskurzu. V rámci výzkumu byla provedena analýza diskurzivních markerů oh, well, so, because, and, but, or, I mean a Y’know.

Abstract:

This thesis focuses on the multifunctional use of discourse markers in the US presidential debates of 2016. The thesis provides an overview of the main features of the presidential debate and introduces individual candidates. The theoretical part describes the properties of individual markers and points out the problematics that surrounds discourse markers terminology and definition. It also provides a list of functions the majority of analysed discourse markers share. The analytical part of this thesis adopts the coherence approach that treats the discourse markers syntactically detachable units whose primary function is to create discourse coherence in spoken language. The primary focus of the thesis lays on the qualitative exploration of functions the individual markers have in analysed discourse. The research provides analysis of discourse markers oh, well, so, because, and, but, or, I mean and Y’know.
