Programmable freedom of choice in the context of the work of Douglas Rushkoff

Abstract:

Bakalářská diplomová práce se zabývá pojmem programovatelnosti, jako vlastnosti média a problematikou svobodné volby uživatele v naprogramovaném prostředí. Práce charakterizuje pojem programovatelnost v konceptu nových médií, přičemž vychází z tezí Douglase Rushkoffa Program or Be Programmed. Ten Commands for a Digital Age. Otázky, které si práce klade, jsou: jakou podobu má svoboda volby v médiích, která jsou programovatelná? Jaké možnosti uživateli tato programovatelnost ve skutečnosti nabízí? Jakého uživatele tato vlastnost média spoluutváří a jak aktivně s ní uživatel pracuje? Cílem práce je pomocí odborné literatury a analýzy myšlenek Douglase Rushkoffa zhodnotit míru manipulace a ukázat na konkrétním příkladu operačních systému Linux a Microsoft Windows tuto fiktivní svobodu.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis follows up the concept of programmability as an attribute of media and the issue of free will choice of a recipient in the programmed environment. The thesis characterizes the concept of programmability in the concept of new media, based on the thesis by Douglas Rushkoff's Ten Commands for a Digital Age. Questions that this thesis sets are: What form has the freedom of choice in media that are programmable? What opportunities does this programmability actually offer to the recipient? What kind of a recipient this feature of the media helps to co-create and how actively this recipient actually works with it? The purpose of this thesis, based on scholar literature and analysis of the work of Douglas Rushkoff, evaluate the degree of manipulation and to show on specific Linux and Microsoft Windows OS example the reality of this fictional free will.
