Air temperature conditions of the northern part of Jamese Ross Island in the period 2005-2010

Abstract:

Ostrov Jamese Rosse je od roku 2007 místem české polární stanice. Ta se nachází v severní části ostrova, který tvoří největší odledněné území v rámci Antarktického poloostrova. Absence předchozího dlouhodobějšího měření meteorologických prvků v této oblasti vyžaduje provedení základního zhodnocení lokálních klimatických podmínek. Tato diplomová práce se zaměřuje na rozbor místních teplotních poměrů v období 2005–2010. S využitím hodinových záznamů o teplotě vzduchu ze sítě automatických meteorologických stanic, nacházejících se v severní části ostrova, byla provedena základní charakteristika chodu teploty vzduchu na úrovni roků, měsíců a dnů. Byly zhodnoceny topoklimatické rozdíly mezi jednotlivými lokalitami s přítomností automatické meteorologické stanice. Dále byly zhodnoceny hlavní faktory, které se na těchto rozdílech mohly podílet. S využitím údajů o směrech větru byla teplotní charakteristika doplněna o posouzení režimu a vlivu advekce vzduchových hmot, které v této oblasti hrají významnou roli při utváření teplotního pole. Analýza teplotních poměrů byla dále rozšířena o charakteristiku teplotních inverzí.

Abstract:

Since 2007 the Jamess Ross Island has been a place of czech polar base. The base is located in northern part of the island, which forms the biggest deglaciated area within Antarctic Peninsula. The lack of prior long-term measurements of meteorological elements in this area, requires the basic assessment of local climatic conditions. This thesis focuses on the analysis of local thermal conditions during the period 2005-2010. Using hourly records of air temperature from a network of automatic weather stations located in the northern part of the island, the basic characteristics of air temperature at the level of years, months and days was carried out. They were evaluated the topoclimatic differences between the sites with the presence of automatic weather stations. Furthermore, assessment of the main factors which might contribute in these differences was performed. Using data of wind direction, it was extended the temperature characteristic by the assessment of regime and the influence of advection of air masses, which play an important role in shaping the temperature field in this area. Analysis of thermal conditions has been further extended to characteristic of the temperature inversion.
