The Influence of Risk Facotors on Body Image Dissatisfaction in Czech Adolescent Girls: Relation to Eating Disorders

Abstract:

Výzkumným cílem diplomové práce bylo ověřit vliv jednotlivých rizikových faktorů na vznik nespokojenosti s tělem a zjistit další vztahy mezi nespokojeností s tělem, adekvátností body image a patologickými jídelními postoji. Teoretická část práce je věnována obecnému vymezení klíčových pojmů a shrnutí teoretických východisek výzkumu. V empirické části je podrobně popsán postup výzkumu a použité metody. Dále byly v této části ověřeny hypotézy, týkající se vlivu jednotlivých rizikových faktorů na míru nespokojenosti s tělem, a zjištěny vztahy mezi nespokojeností s tělem, adekvátností body image a patologickými jídelními postoji. Výzkumu se zúčastnilo 204 dívek ve věku 15-19 let z různých středních škol v Jablonci nad Nisou a Liberci. Nespokojenost s tělem byla zjišťována pomocí dvou škál Profilu tělesného sebepojetí (Tělesné atraktivity a Fyzické sebeúcty) (Fox, Forbín, 1989). Sebehodnocení (sebepřijetí a kompetentnost) bylo měřeno pomocí Škály SLCS-R – The Self-Liking/Self Competence Scale (Tafarodi, Swan, 1995). Úroveň osobnostních proměnných byla určována pomocí dotazníku NEO-FFI (Costa, McCrae, 1980), výchovné styly v rodině pomocí škály výchovných stylů z mezinárodního projektu SAHA vyvinuté pod stejným názvem Weissbergem et.al. (1991) a upraveného Schwab-Stone et.al. (1999). Pro zjištění patologických jídelních postojů byl použit Test jídelních postojů (Garner, Garfinkel, 1979) a ke zmapování problematiky body image byl administrován Stunkardův test siluet. Ze zjištěných výsledků vyplývá, že nejsilnějším prediktorem nespokojenosti s tělem je sebepřijetí, dále pak BMI. Prokázal se i vliv kompetentnosti, časopisů pro adolescentní dívky a osobnostních proměnných (neuroticismu, extroverze a svědomitosti). Byla zjištěna souvislost mezi spokojeností s tělem a patologickými jídelními postoji a signifikantně vyšší skóre v Testu jídelních postojů u dívek s neadekvátním body image. Výsledky ukázaly, že dívky z učilišť a dívky, jejichž rodiče dosáhli nižšího vzdělání, jsou více nespokojené se svým tělem. Taktéž byla prokázána souvislost mezi prospěchem a nespokojeností s tělem. Nebyl nalezen vztah mezi výchovnými styly a spokojeností s tělem a ukázalo se, že dívky, které čtou časopisy pro adolescentní dívky a ty, které je nečtou, se ve spokojenosti s tělem neliší.

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis was to prove the influence of the risk factors on the uprise of body image dissatisfaction and to find out other relations between the body image dissatisfaction, body image adequacy and eating disorders. The theoretical part of this thesis deals with the general definitions of keywords and the summary of theoretical bases for our research. In the empirical part of this study the procedure and research methods are described and the hypotheses are tested. In the research there were 204 girls at the age of 15-19 from different schools in Jablonec nad Nisou and Liberec taking apart in it . The body image dissatisfaction was examined by two scales of Physical Self-Perception Profile (BODY a PSW). The self esteem was measured by SLCS-R – The Self-Liking/Self Competence Scale (Tafarodi, Swan, 1995). The level of personality variables were identified by NEO-FFI questionnaire (Costa, McCrae, 1980), education styles in family by the scale of education styles from the SAHA questionnaire, developed by Weissbergem et.al (1991) and adjusted by Schwab-Stone et.al. (1999). We used the Eating Attitude Test (Garner, Garfinkel, 1979) to examine the pathological eating attitudes and Stunkard silhouette test was presented to find out the body image issues. The results show that self-liking and BMI are the strongest predictors of the body image dissatisfaction. The influence of competence, magazines for adolescent girls and the personality variables (neuroticism, extraversion, conscientiousness) were proved too. The relation between body image dissatisfaction and pathological eating attitudes was confirmed as well as the significantly higher score in the Eating Attitude Test by the girls with inadequate body image. The relation between upbringing styles and the body image dissatisfaction was not found and it was showed that the girls who read the magazines for adolescent girls and those who don’t, do not differ in body image dissatisfaction.
