Perceptions of Different Accents of English

Abstract:

Cílem předkládané práce bylo ověřit, jak rodilí mluvčí angličtiny posuzují různé přízvuky tohoto jazyka, se zaměřením na mluvčí americké angličtiny, kteří v online výzkumu posuzovali dvě nahrávky projevu rodilých mluvčí britské angličtiny, a to přízvuků yorkshirského a cockney. Teoretická část práce představuje faktory ovlivňující přízvuk, odlišnosti vývoje standardní britské a obecné americké angličtiny a porovnává je z různých lingvistických hledisek. Poté je ze stejných hledisek popsán yorkshirský a cockney přízvuk. Výzkum monitoruje domnělé osobnostní vlastnosti a společensko-ekonomický status britských mluvčí v očích amerických účastníků studie. Venkovský yorkshirský přízvuk byl ohodnocen jako méně srozumitelný, sympatičtější, dobrosrdečnější a méně kompetentní než cockney přízvuk a socio-ekonomický status jeho mluvčího byl shledán nižším než u zástupce cockney přízvuku. Urbánní přízvuk cockney byl účastníky ohodnocen jako srozumitelnější, méně sympatický, méně dobrosrdečný a kompetentnější než yorkshirský přízvuk a jeho společensko-ekonomický status byl shledán vyšším než u yorkshirského přízvuku, ale nižším než u prestižní formy britské angličtiny, tzv. Received Pronunciation.

Abstract:

The aim of the thesis was to monitor perceptions of English accents by native speakers of English, with focus on how speakers of American English accents perceive the phonetic aspects of British English accents. Two representatives of accents of the British Isles, Yorkshire and Cockney, have been chosen to be featured in the online research and have been evaluated by speakers of American English. The theory introduces general accent-influencing factors, differences in development of Standard British English and General American English, and draws a comparison between them. Yorkshire and Cockney accents are described from multiple linguistic points of view as well. The survey monitors perceived personal qualities and socio-economic statuses of British speakers in the eyes of American English speakers. The rural Yorkshire accent has been perceived as less intelligible, more likeable, more good-natured and less competent than the Cockney accent, and the socio-economic status of the Yorkshire speaker was found average and lower than with Cockney. The urban Cockney accent was evaluated as more intelligible, less likeable, less good-natured and more competent than the Yorkshire accent, and its socio-economic status was perceived as higher than Yorkshire, but as lower than the prestigious Received Pronunciation.
