The Influence of Self-esteem in Coping Strategies and Risk Behavior

Abstract:

Práce se zabývá otázkou vlivu sebehodnocení na zvládání zátěžových situací u dospívajících. Speciální ohled je přitom věnován genderovým rozdílům. Teoretická část popisuje a charakterizuje vybrané aspekty, jako je adolescence, sebehodnocení, zátěžová situace a coping. Dále udává také příklady jednotlivých výzkumů, které byly k daným otázkám provedeny a sepsány. Design této studie je kvantitativní, neexperimentální. Použity byly následující diagnostické nástroje: dotazník CTK a Rosenbergova škála sebehodnocení. K empirické analýze svých teoretických východisek jsem použila data získaná ve studii ELSPAC (Evropská longitudinální studie těhotenství a dětství). Výzkumný soubor byl tvořen sedmnáctiletými respondenty, kteří vyplnili dané dotazníky. Výsledky výzkumu ve svém souhrnu poukazují na vztah úrovně sebehodnocení s několika zvládacími styly a na genderové rozdíly v sebehodnocení i využívání jednotlivých copingových strategií.

Abstract:

The work deals with the influence and connection of self-esteem on stressful situations in teenagers´ behaviour. There is special emphasize to gender differences. The theoretical part describes and characterizes the selected aspects, such as adolescence, self-esteem, stress situations and coping. In addition it also gives examples of studies that are conducted by the issues of matter. For my investigation I chose quantitative non-experimental methods. I used these diagnostic methods: the questionnaire CTK, the Rosenberg’s Scale of Self-evaluation. For the empirical analysis of the theoretical basis I used data which were obtained from the European Longitudinal Study of Pregnancy and Childhood (ELSPAC). The research population consists of 17-year-old adolescents who fill up the diagnostic methods. The research results point to a relationship between self-esteem and coping styles and gender differences in self-esteem and use of individual coping strategies.
