Aspects of Connected Speech in English: Assessing Students’ Progress After Pronunciation Training

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá aspekty souvislé řeči v anglickém jazyce. Tuto oblast podrobně zkoumá, popisuje a hodnotí pokrok žáků po výslovnostním tréninku. Nejprve se práce věnuje teoretickým aspektům a uvádí rysy souvislé řeči v angličtině, například spojování slov, slabé formy, slovní přízvuk, větný přízvuk, rytmus či intonaci. Dále práce prezentuje výsledky průzkumu výuky výslovnosti v České republice. Výsledky ukazují, že prvky spojité anglické řeči jsou pro učitele problematickou oblastí, protože mnozí z nich nemají teoretické znalosti z oboru nebo raději vyučují výslovnost samostatných zvuků. Hlavní část práce se zabývá výslovnostním kurzem, který byl vytvořen pro účely této diplomové práce. Jeho obsah měl vést ke zvýšení povědomí studentů o anglické spojité řeči a poskytnout jim dostatek komunikativní praxe, aby bylo možné začlenit nově naučené prvky do jejich řeči. Hypotéza tvrdí, že studenti na úrovni B1 a B2 (hodnocení dle CEFR) by měli být schopni začlenit prvky anglické spojité řeči do své promluvy, což by vedlo ke zlepšení jejich srozumitelnosti. Výsledky jednotlivých žáků byly různorodé, ale celkově všichni studenti vykazovali tendenci ke zlepšení. Zpravidla, pokud se u studentů zlepšil větný přízvuk a dělení řeči do tónových jednotek, byla také jejich řeč lépe srozumitelná. Oblast, ve které většina studentů nezaznamenala zlepšení, byly slabé formy a výslovnost znělých souhlásek.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis deals with aspects of connected speech in the English language. It examines the area in detail and describes and assesses students’ progress after pronunciation training. First, the thesis gives some theoretical background and introduces features of connected speech in English such as linking, weak forms, words stress, sentence stress, rhythm or the peak of prominence. Then it presents results of a survey on pronunciation teaching in the Czech Republic. The results show that connected speech features are a problematic area for English language teachers because many of them lack theoretical knowledge of the field or they prefer teaching individual sounds. The majority of student have expressed interest in English pronunciation and stated they would appreciate having more systematic pronunciation training. The main part of the thesis is concerned with a pronunciation course that intended to raise students’ awareness of English connected speech features and provide them with enough communicative practice to be able to incorporate the features into their speech. The hypothesis suggested that students at B1 and B2 levels would be able to incorporate connected speech feature into their speech which would result in an improvement in the intelligibility. The individual students’ results were of diverse nature but overall, all the students showed a tendency to improvement. As a rule, if students’ stress, rhythm and the use of tone units improved, they became more comfortably intelligible. The area in which most students did not progress was weak forms, followed by voicing.
