Contemporary Conflict with North Korea: Factors of Crisis Development

Abstract:

V dubnu a květnu 2018 jsou plánována bilaterální jednání severokorejských představitelů s jejich jihokorejskými a americkými protějšky. Hlavními tématy rozhovorů mají být otázky denuklearizace a potenciálního sjednocení obou Korejí. Přitom dochází k bezprecedentnímu stupňování napětí. Toto napětí zapříčinila řada odlišných faktorů. V předkládané diplomové práci jsou identifikovány čtyři hlavní faktory – historického, osobnostního, ekonomického a kulturního charakteru. Cílem práce je identifikovat, které z těchto faktorů stály za eskalací konfliktního stavu se severokorejským režimem. Stojí za gradací napětí na poloostrově odkaz Korejské války, resp. pokračování zástupné války světových mocností? Jsou to osobnosti Kim Čong-una a Donalda Trumpa, které stojí za zhoršenou bezpečnostní situací? Anebo lze příčiny hledat v hroutící se severokorejské ekonomice a s tím spojenou snahou režimu o zachování mocenského postavení? Případně lze eskalaci konfliktního vývoje přisuzovat střetu odlišných kultur v důsledku globalizace? Tyto a další dílčí výzkumné otázky budou zodpovězeny k naplnění ultimativního cíle, kterým je identifikace klíčového faktoru, jenž krizový vývoj zapříčinil.

Abstract:

In April and May 2018, bilateral talks are planned between North Korean officials and their South Korean and US counterparts. The main topics to be discussed are the denuclearization of the peninsula and the potential unification of the Koreas. There has been an unprecedented increase in tensions connected to the North Korean regime recently. These tensions had been caused by a number of different factors. Four main factors - historical, economic, cultural and those based on personality traits - are identified in the thesis. The aim of the thesis is to identify which of these factors has been behind the escalation of the conflict situation with the North Korean regime. Is there any linkage to the Korean War? If this is the case, shall we consider the rise in tensions to be the continuation of the proxy war of the world powers? Or, can we find a causal relationship in the actors of Kim Jong un and Donald Trump? Shall we try to find the cause in the collapsing North Korean economy and the combined effort of the regime to maintain its power position? Finally, can the escalation of conflict development be attributed to the conflict of different cultures as a result of globalization? These and other sub-research questions will be answered to meet the ultimate goal of identifying the key factor behind the crisis.
