Ambivalent portrayal of feminism in John Irving's The World According to Garp

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá analýzou feministických prvků obsažených v díle "Svět podle Garpa" (1987) od Johna Irvinga, jelikož autorův pohled na feminismus v tomto románu není zcela jednoznačný. Teoretická část se věnuje historickému přehledu amerického feminismu, popisu společenského vnímaní tehdejších žen, jsou zde zmíněné i významné feministické autorky a jejich díla, a v neposlední řadě je věnován prostor samotnému autorovi románu Johnu Irvingovi a jeho životním inspiracím a slavným dílům s podobnou tématikou. Hlavním cílem praktické části je poukázat na ambivalenci feminismu, který autor v díle uvádí a to rozborem feministických prvků a vztahem samotného autora k feminismu.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis deals with the analysis of the perception of feminism as described by John Irving in the novel "The World According to Garp" (1987), since the author's primary view on feminism is not clear, the reader is confused with the meaning. The theoretical part is devoted to the historical overview of American feminism, description of the perception of women in society at the time, also mentioned are the most significant feminist authors, and last but not least John Irving's life inspirations and his most famous novels with this similar theme are described. The main goal of the practical part of this thesis is to point out the ambivalence of feminism which the author depicts in his novel, thus the analysis of feminist values and the perception of feminism of the author himself are portrayed.
