Using satellite data to identify invasive plants

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se zaměřuje na detekci invazivních rostlin s využitím družicových dat. Byl vybrán invazivní druh bolševník velkolepý a byly využity snímky z družice Sentinel-2 o prostorovém rozlišení deset metrů a PlanetScope o prostorovém rozlišení tři metry. Vybrány byly dvě lokality nacházející se v Plzeňském a Karlovarském kraji. Pro detekci bolševníku velkolepého byly vyzkoušeny tři metody – řízená klasifikace za pomoci klasifikátorů Random Forest a Support Vector Machine, rozhodovací strom a algoritmy Target Detection. Výsledky ukázaly, že využití vhodné metody záleží na lokalitě, způsobu rozšíření bolševníku velkolepého a na datu, ze kterého pochází využitý snímek. Výzkum ukázal, že dobrých výsledků lze dosáhnout jak s využitím dat se středním, tak s vyšším prostorovým rozlišením a že družicové snímky mohou sloužit jako vhodný nástroj pro detekci invazivních rostlin.

Abstract:

The bachelor's thesis focuses on the detection of invasive plants using satellite data. The invasive species selected was the giant hogweed, and images from the Sentinel-2 satellite with a spatial resolution of ten meters and PlanetScope with a spatial resolution of three meters were utilized. Two locations in the Plzeň and Karlovy Vary regions were chosen for analysis. Three methods were tested for the detection of giant hogweed: supervised classification using Random Forest and Support Vector Machine classifiers, decision tree, and Target Detection algorithms. The results showed that the choice of a suitable method depends on the location, the manner of giant hogweed spread, and the date of the utilized image. The research demonstrated that good results can be achieved using both medium and higher spatial resolution data and that satellite images can serve as a suitable tool for detecting invasive plants.
