Self-regulated learning in students of traditional and alternative middle schools

Abstract:

This diploma thesis deals with the effect of alternative education on students’ self-regulated learning and perceived autonomy support in middle schools. The aim of this thesis was to compare the achieved score of self-regulated learning as well as the score of perceived autonomy support between students of traditional and alternative schools. Students rated how they perceived autonomy support from their teachers in learning climate and from their parents in their home environment. Furthermore, the research aimed to investigate the relationship between self-regulated learning and perceived autonomy support in those two environments. In addition, we compared the students of individual alternative schools, Montessori and Waldorf school. The theoretical part presents the current theories and studies that deal with the effect of alternative education on students and the correlation between autonomy support, motivation and self-regulated learning. Two traditional and two alternative schools participated in this research, making a total of 181 students. The results of this research show that Montessori students score higher in self-regulated learning than students of traditional and Waldorf school. Students of both alternative schools score higher in perceived autonomy support in learning climate. Self-regulated learning positively correlates with perceived autonomy support in both academic and home environment.

Abstract:

Diplomová práca sa zaoberá vplyvom alternatívneho vzdelania na seba-regulované učenie a vnímanú podporu autonómie žiaka na druhom stupni základných škôl. Cieľom práce bolo porovnanie dosiahnutej miery seba-regulovaného učenia a miery vnímanej podpory autonómie medzi žiakmi tradičných a alternatívnych škôl. Žiaci hodnotili v akej miere vnímajú podporu autonómie v školskom prostredí zo strany svojich učiteľov a v domácom prostredí zo strany rodičov. Cieľom výskumu bolo taktiež preskúmanie vzťahov medzi seba-regulovaným učením a podporou autonómie v týchto dvoch prostrediach. V práci sme porovnávali aj žiakov jednotlivých alternatívnych škôl, Montessori a waldorfskej školy. Teoretická časť predkladá súčasné teórie a výskumy zaoberajúce sa vplyvom alternatívneho vzdelania na žiaka a súvisom podpory autonómie s motiváciou a seba-regulovaným učením žiaka. Do výskumu sa zapojili dve tradičné a dve alternatívne školy, celkovú vzorku tvorilo 181 žiakov. Výsledky tohto výskumu ukazujú, žiaci Montessori školy dosahujú vyššiu mieru seba-regulovaného učenia ako žiaci tradičnej a waldorfskej školy. Žiaci oboch alternatívnych škôl vykazujú vyššiu mieru vnímanej podpory autonómie v školskom prostredí. Seba-regulované učenie pozitívne koreluje s podporou autonómie v školskom aj domácom prostredí.
