Relative hand size as an indicator of early ontogenetic growth

Abstract:

Proporce ruky se ustanovují již časně prenatálně a mohou tak odrážet faktory růstu, které v tomto období působí. Cílem této práce bylo prostudovat mezipohlavní rozdíly v relativní velikosti ruky vůči celkové velikosti těla. Materiál představovalo 161 dospělých a dětí, u kterých byly sledovány rozměry ruky (délka druhého a čtvrtého prstu, délka ruky a šířka ruky) a jejich vztah k výšce postavy a tělesné hmotnosti u mužů a žen. Vztah mezi velikostí ruky a velikostí těla byl analyzován s využitím lineární regresní analýzy a analýzy rozptylu. U dospělých byly hodnoceny přímo naměřené hodnoty rozměrů ruky, u dětí byla hodnocena rezidua lineárního modelu závislosti rozměru ruky na věku. Veškeré rozměry ruky u dospělých vykazují mezipohlavní rozdíly, ovšem pouze délka čtvrtého prstu a šířka ruky vykazují významný vliv pohlaví i po odstranění vlivu výšky postavy. To naznačuje, že dimorfismus některých rozměrů ruky je dán čistě dimorfismem ve velikosti těla, zatímco dimorfismus jiných rozměrů, zejména v ulnární oblasti ruky, nelze celý vysvětlit jen velikostí těla. U dětí byly zjištěny obdobné výsledky, což naznačuje časný ontogenetický původ mezipohlavní disproporcionality ulnární strany ruky.

Abstract:

The proportions of the hand are established early prenatally and may reflect the growth factors that operate during this period. The aim of this study was to study sex differences in relative hand size to overall body size. The material consisted of 161 adults and children, in whom hand dimensions (second and fourth finger length, hand length and hand width) and their relationship to body height and body weight were studied in males and females. The relationship between hand size and body size was analysed using linear regression analysis and analysis of variance. Directly measured values of hand size were assessed in adults, and the residuals of a linear model of hand size against age were assessed in children. All hand dimensions in adults showed significant sex differences, but only fourth finger length and hand width showed a significant effect of sex even after removing the effect of body height. This suggests that dimorphism in some hand dimensions is due purely to dimorphism in body size, whereas dimorphism in other dimensions, particularly in the ulnar region of the hand, cannot be explained entirely by body size. Similar results were found in children, suggesting an early ontogenetic origin of the intersexual disproportionality of the ulnar side of the hand.
