A Comparative Analysis of English Language Teaching in Czech and Norwegian Schools

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá srovnáním školských systémů a kurikula v České republice a Norsku a dále porovnává výuku anglického jazyka na dvou zahraničních školách. Cílem je vysvětlit rozdíly ve vzdělávacích systémech a přístupech v kontextu osvojování anglického jazyka. V první části podává přehled českého a norského školského systému a způsobů hodnocení žáků. Po analýze kurikula v České republice a Norsku se věnuje zkoumání role anglického jazyka v rámci jednotlivých vzdělávacích systémů. Zkoumá, jak je anglický jazyk umístěn a hodnocen a jaká je jeho role v jednotlivých dokumentech. Ve druhé části se pozorování zabývá třemi hlavními tématy a třemi výzkumnými otázkami. Prostřednictvím kvantitativní analýzy práce rozpoznává vzorce v anglických dovednostech používaných v jednotlivých hodinách, poměr mezi dobou mluvení učitele a dobou mluvení žáků a poměr mezi používáním mateřského a anglického jazyka, a to nejen obecně, ale i učiteli a žáky zvlášť. Výsledky tohoto výzkumu pomáhají hlouběji porozumět výuce anglického jazyka v různých kulturních kontextech. Zaměřením na tři hlavní kategorie poukazuje na podobnosti a rozdíly ve dvou zemích a nachází oblasti potencionální inspirace.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis undertakes a comparative examination of school systems and curricula between the Czech Republic and Norway. Then it compares English teaching in two foreign schools. The aim is to explain the differences in the educational systems and approaches in the context of English language acquisition. In the first part, it provides an overview of the Czech and Norwegian school systems and its evaluation methods. It explains basic education in each country. Following an analysis of the curricula in the Czech Republic and Norway, the research digs into exploring the role of English within each educational system. It examines how English is placed, and valued and what is its role in each document. In the second part, an observation deals with three main topics and three research questions. Through quantitative analysis, the thesis recognizes patterns in English skills used in each lesson, the ratio between teacher talking time (TTT) and student talking time (STT) and lastly the ratio between the usage of mother and target language, not only in general but also by teachers and students separately. The findings of this research help to understand the English language education in diverse cultural contexts deeper. By focusing on three main categories, it highlights the similarities and differences in two countries and finds areas for protentional inspiration.
