Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá vlivem chování učitelů na ochotu komunikovat u studentů střední školy/gymnázia. Cílem práce bylo zjistit, jaké chování učitelů a jak z pohledu žáků ovlivňuje jejich ochotu komunikovat s učiteli v rámci hodin angličtiny. V minulosti se výzkum v kontextu chování učitelů a ochoty komunikovat totiž věnoval tomuto propojení jen jako části, nikoli jakožto centrálnímu jevu, a navíc probíhal zejména v asijském a americkém prostředí. Práce začíná teoretickým úvodem, který představuje základní koncepty a pokračuje shrnutím literatury a vybraných studií. Následující část představuje výsledky analýzy. Jako metoda byla použita zakotvená teorie, na jejíž bázi bylo uskutečněno 7 polo strukturovaných rozhovorů se 7 různý-mi účastníky. Pomocí kódování bylo zaznamenáno 11 různých kategorií, které mají vliv na ochotu komunikovat – Faktory zvyšující stres, Nálada, Přátelskost, Respekt a podpora, Osobní život učitele, Vztah s učitelem, Bezpečná zóna, Integrita, Neverbální komunikace, Individualita a Hodiny, v kterých se odbíhá od angličtiny. Většina kate-gorií sestává z několika podkategorií, které představují různé pohledy na chování učitelů a jejich příklady, včetně toho, jak v těchto případech dané chování ochotu komunikovat ovlivnilo. Následuje diskuse a závěr. Hlavním zjištěním práce jsou již zmíněné kategorie chování a jejich vliv na žákovskou ochotu komunikovat – nejčet-nější byly v rámci rozhovorů zmínky, které spadají do kategorií Přátelskost, Integrita a Respekt a podpora. Chování, které nejvíce podporuje žákovskou ochotu komuniko-vat je například nápomocnost, zájem o studenty, integrace zajímavých témat blíz-kých studentům, dodržování slibů, či využití humoru ve výuce. Žákovskou ochotu komunikovat potom snižuje nerovné zacházení se studenty, příliš častá kritika, či nezájem o studenty jako takové. Diskuse obsahuje propojení výsledků této studie s výsledky studií provedených v minulosti, limity a možné implikace pro budoucí výzkum a učitelskou praxi.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis focuses on teacher behaviour and its effect on high school stu-dents’ willingness to communicate (WTC). The aim was to find out how students perceive the teacher behaviour affects their WTC in frontal teaching in Czech EFL classrooms, as, in the past, the research on WTC in connection to teacher behaviour was done mainly in Asian or American contexts, focusing on other aspects as well, paying only little attention to teacher behaviour in particular. The thesis begins with theoretical background, presenting the basic concepts and continues with a review of literature and selected research done in the past. Results chapter follows, presenting the outcomes of the analysis. The method used for the research was grounded theory – semi-structured interviews with 7 different participants were conducted and subsequently coded for categories. Eleven different categories emerged – Factors increasing stress, Mood, Friendliness, Respect and support, Teacher personal life, Relationship with the teacher, Safe zone, Integrity, Non-verbal communication, Individuality and Lesson shifts away from English. Most of the cate-gories consist of multiple sub-categories offering different perspectives and instanc-es of teacher behaviour influencing WTC. Discussion and conclusion follow. The ma-jor findings are the already mentioned categories of teacher behaviour and its effect on students’ WTC – most commonly mentioned teacher behaviours were those un-der the categories of Friendliness, Integrity and Respect and Support. The most WTC promoting behaviour showed to be for instance helpfulness, interest in stu-dents, including interesting and relatable topics for the students, keeping promises or using humour. On the contrary, the most WTC decreasing teacher behaviour was reported to be unequal treatment of the students, frequent criticism or not being interested in students. The discussion section synthesises results of this study with the results of the selected studies conducted in the past, mentions limitations of this study and offers possible implications for further research and teaching practice.
