An Economic-political analysis of the relationship between Iceland and the European Union

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce pojednává o hospodářsko-politickém vztahu mezi Islandem a Evropskou unií. Práce obsahuje představení ekonomické situace Islandu, analýzu dopadů na tři hlavních sektory islandské ekonomiky v případě členství v Evropské unii, analýzu dopadů finanční krize v roce 2008 na vnímání Evropské unie islandským obyvatelstvem, analýzu islandského politického smýšlení ohledně vstupu do Evropské unie a zjištění případné pozice Islandu v evropských institucích a následně analýzu vhodnosti eura vůči islandské koruně. Zjištěné závěry z analýz jsou následně vyhodnoceny a formulovány do vlastního zhodnocení a doporučení strategie jak pro Island, tak pro Evropskou unii.

Abstract:

This master thesis deals with an economic-political analysis of the relationship between Iceland and the European Union. The thesis includes the introduction of the Icelandic economic situation, an analysis of consequences of three main sectors of the Icelandic economy in terms of the accession to the European Union, an analysis of consequences of the financial crisis in 2008 and its impact on the way how Icelandic inhabitants see the European Union, an analysis of Icelandic political thinking about accession to the European Union and consideration of future Icelandic position in European institutions, and finally, an analysis of advantages of euro compared to Icelandic crown. Detected results from the analysis are evaluated and formulated to the final evaluation and the recommended strategy for Iceland, as well as, for the European Union.
