Aspiration in English pronunciation of the Czech language speakers

Abstract:

This thesis focuses on students studying English as second language and their usage of aspirated consonants p, t, k in spoken word. The purpose of this research is to show how frequent the usage of aspiration in spoken English is among these students and to show how close to native speakers they try to get while speaking using these aspirated letters. This thesis aims to analyse and comment on reading of my colleagues via recordings they will provide. The exact sample text will be read by all students without them knowing what the purpose is to show the differences in speaking and aspiration itself. All the recordings will be provided by my colleagues, and Praat sound software will be used to deliver sound waves to help analyse aspiration and to tell if aspiration was used or not.

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zaměřuje na zkoumání studentů studujících angličtinu jako druhý jazyk a používání aspirovaných souhlásek p, t, k při mluvě. Účelem této práce je ukázat, jak časté je používání aspirace v mluvené angličtině výše zmíněnými studenty a také ukázat, jak se snaží přiblížit rodilým mluvčím pomocí užívání aspirace. Cílem je analyzovat čtení spolužáků pomocí nahrávek. Stejný text bude přečten všemi studenty bez vědomí přesného záměru, což ukáže rozdíl v mluvě a přítomnost použité aspirace. Po získání všech nahrávek bude použit zvukový software Praat, který bude použit k zaznamenání a zobrazení zvukových vln, které pomohou při určování přítomnosti aspirace.
