Czech psychology during totalitarianism 1948-1989: Slipping past the barriers od the era

Abstract:

Disertační práce se věnuje etapě novodobé historie české psychologie v letech 1948–1989. Zpracovává téma specifických podmínek, kterým čelil obor za totalitního komunistického režimu. Na zkoumané období pohlíží především perspektivou tzv. cestiček neboli strategií, které pomáhaly českým psychologům, psychoterapeutům nebo studentům psychologie čelit nepřízni doby. Kvalitativní výzkum byl realizován pod záštitou projektu Tvůrci novodobé české psychologie: příspěvek k orální historii české psychologie podpořeného GA ČR (19-11117S, 2019-2021). Zpracovává 20 rozhovorů s nestory české psychologie, které projekt realizoval, a data z archivních pramenů. Výsledky kvalitativní analýzy jsou představeny v pěti tematických celcích: a) Vysoké školy; b) Kontakt se zahraničím; c) Odborná psychologická literatura; d) Preferované a „buržoazní“ směry a témata v psychologii; e) Podmínky v zaměstnání. Všemi pěti kapitolami se prolíná téma cestiček. Vyústěním práce je charakteristika a návrh členění cestiček. Všechna témata také zachycují časovou linku vývoje politické situace v Československu, která se promítla do proměňujících se podmínek oboru.

Abstract:

The dissertation is devoted to the stage of the modern history of the Czech psychology in 1948–1989. It deals with the topic of specific conditions the field faces under the totalitarian communist regime. It observes this period mainly from the perspective of the so-called paths, or strategies which helped Czech psychologists, psychotherapists, or psychology students to face the adversity of the times. Qualitative research was realized under the auspices of the project Creators of Contemporary Czech Psychology: A Contribution to Oral History of the Czech Psychology supported by GA ČR (19-11117S, 2019-2021). It processes 20 interviews with key figures of Czech psychology that the project realizes and data from archival sources. The results of the qualitative analysis are presented in five thematic units: a) Universities; b) International relations; c) Professional psychological literature; d) Preferred and "bourgeois" disciplines and topics in psychology; e) Conditions of employment. The theme of paths runs through all five chapters. The thesis‘ outcome is the characteristics and suggestion of classification of the types of the paths. All topics also cover the timeline of the development of the political situation in Czechoslovakia which was reflected in the changing conditions in the field.
