Nezaměstnanost mladých lidí v Keni

Abstract:

Keňa je označována jako mladistvý národ, protože více než sedmdesát procent populace lze klasifikovat jako mládež. Dle ekonomické teorie se předpokládá, že mladá populace by měla mít za následek vyšší výkonnost a prosperitu v ekonomice, což se označuje jako dividenda mládí v Keni. V Keni však nejsou žádné známky dividendy mládí. Namísto toho Keňa čelí vážné krizi nezaměstnanosti, přičemž podle odhadů je deset procent populace nezaměstnané. Další analýza dynamiky nezaměstnanosti ukazuje, že nezaměstnanost, zejména mezi mládeží, je vysoká a pohybuje se od 15 do 25 procent. Cílem této práce bylo analyzovat nezaměstnanost mladých lidí v Keni. Toho bylo dosaženo hodnocením účinků makroekonomických proměnných na nezaměstnanost, dynamiku nezaměstnanosti mladých lidí ve východní Africe a mezní strategie zavedené k řešení problému nezaměstnanosti. Studie prokázala, že míra nezaměstnanosti mladých lidí, podzaměstnanosti a nečinnosti byla ve východní Africe vysoká. Studie zjistila, že keňská vláda zavedla strukturální, aktivní trh práce a makroekonomické politiky. Programy čelily různým výzvám, včetně korupce, úzkého zaměření, protekce a negativního etnického původu. Účinky makroekonomických proměnných na nezaměstnanost mladých byly hodnoceny pomocí autoregresní distribuované metody časových řad s údaji za období 1980–2019. Studie zjistila, že v dlouhodobém, krátkodobém a v prvním hodnocení jsou účinky HDP na nezaměstnanost mladých lidí pozitivní a statisticky nevýznamné. Bylo zjištěno, že vliv veřejného dluhu na nezaměstnanost mladých lidí je z dlouhodobého hlediska negativní a statisticky nevýznamný. Z krátkodobého hlediska byl účinek shledán pozitivním a statisticky významným. Bylo zjištěno, že úroková sazba má pozitivní, ale statisticky nevýznamný vliv na nezaměstnanost mladých lidí z dlouhodobého i krátkodobého hlediska. Z dlouhodobého hlediska měl úvěr soukromému sektoru negativní a statisticky významný vliv na nezaměstnanost mladých lidí v Keni. Z krátkodobého hlediska byly účinky shledány pozitivními a statisticky významnými. V krátkodobém horizontu bylo zjištěno, že úspory mají negativní a statisticky nevýznamný vliv na nezaměstnanost mladých lidí. Z dlouhodobého hlediska byly účinky shledány pozitivními a statisticky nevýznamnými. Z krátkodobého hlediska bylo zjištěno, že nabídka peněz má pozitivní a statisticky nevýznamný vliv na nezaměstnanost mladých lidí. Z dlouhodobého hlediska byly účinky shledány pozitivními a statisticky významnými. V krátkodobém horizontu bylo zjištěno, že populace má negativní a statisticky nevýznamný vliv na nezaměstnanost mladých lidí. Z dlouhodobého hlediska byly účinky shledány pozitivními a statisticky nevýznamnými.

Abstract:

Kenya is referred to as a youthful nation because more than seventy per cent of the population can be classified as youth. In economic theory, it is postulated that a young population should result in greater output and prosperity in the economy this is referred to as the youth dividend. However, there is no sign of the youth dividend in Kenya. Instead, Kenya is faced with a severe unemployment crisis with an estimated ten per cent of the population being unemployed. Further analysis of the unemployment dynamics shows that unemployment particularly amongst the youth is high ranging from fifteen to 25 per cent. The objective of this thesis was to analyse youth unemployment in Kenya. This was achieved by evaluating the effects of macroeconomic variables on unemployment, youth unemployment dynamics in East Africa, and the cut-off strategies put in place to deal with the unemployment challenge. The study established that the level of youth unemployment, underemployment, inactivity were high in East Africa. The study found that the government of Kenya had put in place structural, active labour market, and macroeconomic policies. However, the schemes have faced various challenges including corruption, narrow focus, nepotism, and negative ethnicity. The effects of macroeconomic variables on youth unemployment were evaluated using the autoregressive distributed lag method with data covering the period 1980-2019. The study found that in the long-run, short-run, and in the first lag the effects of GDP on youth unemployment is positive and statistically insignificant. The effect of public debt on youth unemployment was found to negative and statistically insignificant in the long-run. In the short-run, the effect was found to be positive and statistically significant. The interest rate was found to have a positive but statistically insignificant effect on youth unemployment in the long –run and short-run. In the long-run credit to the private sector had a negative and statistically significant effect on youth unemployment in Kenya. In the short-run the effects were found to be positive and statistically significant. In the short-run, savings were found to have a negative and statistically insignificant effect on youth unemployment. In the long-run, the effects were found to be positive and statistically insignificant. In the short-run money supply was found to have a positive and statistically insignificant effect on youth unemployment. In the long-run the effects were found to be positive and statistically significant. In the short-run population was found to have a negative and statistically insignificant effect on youth unemployment. In the long-run, the effects were found to be positive and statistically insignificant.
