The Potential of Digital Games’ Educational Principles Utilised in E-learning

Abstract:

Vysoké školy jsou průkopníky e-learningu, který je aktuální a efektivní technologickou pomůckou distančního studia. Tato studie navrhuje posun vzdělávacího paradigmatu směrem od instruktivního (lineárního, pasivního) pojetí k výuce postavené na herních principech. Sleduje, jak mohou digitální hry vstoupit do výuky a studia na Masarykově univerzitě a jestli jsou učební herní principy slučitelné s logikou dominantního vzdělávacího paradigmatu. Práce má poodhalit, jaké místo hry ve výuce mediované e-learningovými prostředky zaujímají a jak na studující působí. Cílem je zjistit, jaký potenciál spatřují vyučující, odborníci a studující v uplatnění herních principů ve výuce, a tak rozpoznat možnosti i limity jejich implementace z hlediska klíčových aktérů vzdělávacího procesu. Souhrn výsledků tematické analýzy rozhovorů s vysokoškolskými vyučujícími a experty na e-learning nám pomůže objasnit jejich postoje k online výuce s herními prvky, a prohloubit naše chápání role, kterou mohou ve vzdělávání účinně plnit. Studie zkoumá a analyzuje nové možnosti, jež moderní informační a komunikační technologie otevírají na poli výuky a celoživotního vzdělávání. Zajímaly nás rovněž postoje vysokoškolských studujících vybraných kurzů s e-learningovou oporou. Výzkum motivačního potenciálu gamifikace výukového online prostředí nám umožnil získat jasnější představu o zkušenostech uživatelů univerzitního systému. Na základě diskuse poznatků doporučujeme vyučujícím a vývojářům výukových online prostředí, jak by mohli zlepšit jejich design v souladu s potřebami a preferencemi studujících.

Abstract:

Universities are pioneers of e-learning, which is an up-to-date and effective technological aid for distance learning. This thesis suggests a shift from the instructive (linear, passive) approach to game-based teaching. It examines how digital games can enter teaching and learning at Masaryk University and whether the learning game principles are compatible with the logic of the dominant educational paradigm. Our study aims to uncover what place games in teaching mediated by e-learning resources hold and how they affect learners. The focus is to find out what potential teachers, experts and students see in the application of game principles in teaching, and thus recognize the possibilities and limits of their implementation from the perspective of key actors in the education process. A summary of the results of the thematic analysis of interviews with university teachers and e-learning experts will help us clarify their attitudes towards online instruction with game elements and deepen our understanding of the role they can effectively fulfill in education. This work researches and analyses new opportunities that modern information and communication technologies open in the field of education and lifelong learning. We were also interested in the attitudes of university students in selected courses with e-learning support. Research into the motivational potential of gamification of the online learning environment allowed us to get a clearer idea of the experiences of users of the university system. Based on the discussion of findings, we recommend to teachers and developers of online learning environments how they could improve their design in accordance with the needs and preferences of students.
