Parental involvement in school activities and student's education as a factor affecting the teacher's evaluation of a student

Abstract:

Foreign research applied among teachers has shown a presence of stereotyping of pupils depending on their name, gender, ethnicity et cetera. Subsequently, this had an impact on their grade evaluation as well. This thesis elaborates on this research and focuses, in particular, on a relationship between teachers and parents in a first grade of elementary school. A variety of studies tried to confirm the proposition that higher levels of collaboration between the family and the school generates a higher success rate which has been proven repeatedly. However, it has not been proven whether categorization or labeling of pupils has any significant impact here. The theoretical part of this thesis highlights basic information about possible distortion, perception and evaluation of reality (opinions, prejudices, stereotypization,...), subsequently brings information about the school evaluation with a focus on aspects which can affect the evaluation process negatively and finally the thesis focuses on a relationship between the school (teachers) and the family (parents). Consequently, the explorative part concentrates on the object of research in particular, which is represented by three given hypotheses where each of them deals with one of the forms of parent participation. These hypotheses are: (1) participation in pupil‘s homework preparation, (2) active involvement in class meetings, (3) active encouragement in school activities. The aim of this thesis is to find out whether pupils are categorized or labeled depending on the level of engagement of their parents and whether this factor has a direct impact on the pupil’s evaluation.

Abstract:

Zahraniční výzkumy prováděné mezi učiteli prokázaly výskyt stereotypizace žáků na základě jména, pohlaví, etnika apod. To mělo následně vliv i na jejich hodnocení. Tato práce na tyto výzkumy navazuje a zaměřuje se konkrétněji na vztah mezi učitelem a rodičem na prvním stupni základní školy. Řada výzkumů se snažila potvrdit tezi, že vyšší míra spolupráce rodiny se školou způsobuje vyšší školní úspěšnost, což se opakovaně podařilo. Nebylo však prokázáno, zda zde nehraje také roli kategorizace či nálepkování žáků. Teoretická část práce přináší základní informace o možnostech zkreslení a vnímání a hodnocení reality (postoje, předsudky, strereotypizace,…), dále přináší informace o školním hodnocení se zaměřením na aspekty, které jej mohou nežádoucím způsobem ovlivnit a poté na vztah školy (učitel) a rodiny (rodič). Výzkumná část se pak zaměřuje konkrétně již na zkoumaný cíl, který představují tři stanovené hypotézy, z nichž se každá zabývá jednou z forem rodičovské participace. Těmi jsou: (1) podílení se na domácí přípravě žáka, (2) aktivní účast na třídních schůzkách, (3) aktivní zapojení do školních aktivit. Cílem práce je zjistit, zda jsou žáci kategorizováni či nálepkováni podle angažovanosti rodičů a zda má tento faktor přímý vliv na hodnocení žáka.
