Social support of surroundings of surviving widows and widowers from their perspective

Abstract:

Cílem této diplomové práce bylo odpovědět na otázku: „Jak a v čem poskytuje okolí sociální oporu vdovám a vdovcům z jejich pohledu?“ Základem teoretické části práce bylo vykreslení životní situace vdov a vdovců v seniorském věku s důrazem na objasnění jejich problémů a schopností zvládat a na uvedení požadavků a očekávání okolí. Dále se teoretická část věnuje sociální opoře, která vdovcům a vdovám může pomoci v adaptaci na úmrtí svého životního partnera. Pojmy byly uvedeny na základě dostupné literatury. Pro nalezení odpovědi na hlavní výzkumnou otázku byla použita kvalitativní strategie výzkumu s metodou porozumění a technikou polo-strukturovaného rozhovoru. Respondenty byli ovdovělí muži a ženy ve věku 65 let a výše a délkou vdovství jeden rok až šest let. Respondenti byli vybráni na základ záměrného výběru. Na základě výsledků šetření byly nastíněny oblasti, ve kterých sociální okolí poskytovalo respondentům daný druh podpory.

Abstract:

The aim of this diploma thesis is to find an answer to the question: “How and in what sense does the environment provide a social support to widows and widowers from their point of view?” As the basis of the theoretical part of the work, the life situation of elderly widows and widowers is depicted with emphasis on specification of their problems and abilities to cope with them, as well as on requirements and expectations of their neighborhood. Further, the theoretical part deals with the social support that helps widows and widowers adapt to death of their life partners. The concepts presented in the thesis are based on the available literature. To answer the main research question, qualitative research strategy together with the technique of semi-structured interview were employed. The respondents were chosen among widowed men and women aged 65 and above with length of widowhood from one to six years. They were selected through purposive sampling. Based on the results of the research, the areas, where social environment provided a given type of support to the respondents, are outlined.
