Farmaka představují polutanty, u nichž v minulosti nebyla předpokládána možnost, že by mohla představovat hrozbu pro životní prostředí. Jde o látky, které jsou vyvíjeny tak, aby působily již za velmi malých koncentrací a aby zůstaly účinné i po delší době skladování. Pharmaceutical substances belong to the group of pollutants of growing concern. Aforementioned substances are designed to influence the target organisms even at a very low concentration, while maintaining suitable shelf life.
