The Influence of Hippotherapy on the improvement of communication skills of children with autism spectrum disorders

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se pokusila zjistit, jaký má vliv terapie koněm na komunikační dovednosti u dětí s autismem. Hipoterapie je doplňková terapie a může využívat koně jako prostředek ke zmírnění negativních projevů autistické poruchy. V odborné literatuře, která mapuje zkušenosti s intervencemi u dětí s autismem v České republice, se autoři o hipoterapii nezmiňují buď vůbec, nebo pouze okrajově. Zahraniční články se tomuto tématu věnují podstatně více. Prvotním zájmem bylo zjistit, jak se daří zlepšit komunikační dovednosti dětí s autismem. Provedený kvalitativní výzkum se prostřednictvím rozhovorů s rodiči sedmi dětí s autistickou poruchou, které se zúčastňují hipoterapie, pokusil sesbírat, roztřídit a najít vztahy mezi získanými daty. Výzkum ukazuje, že rodiče všech sedmi dětí s autismem vnímají zlepšení jejich komunikačních dovedností. Navíc se této terapie rádi zúčastňují nejen děti, ale i rodiče. Z vyprávění rodičů také vyplývá, že hipoterapie má pozitivní účinek na vytváření vztahů dětí ke zvířatům i k lidem a v neposlední řadě také na získávání dovedností.

Abstract:

This thesis explored the effects of hippotherapy on the communication skills of children with autistic spectrum disorder (ASD). Hippotherapy is a type of a complementary therapy that uses guided interactions with horses to alleviate the negative manifestations of the disorder. Whilst research in the Czech Republic into treatment methods for children with ASD mentions hippotherapy only marginally or omits it completely, international studies focus on this topic substantially more. Using qualitative methods, the primary aim of this thesis was to establish whether communication skills of children with ASD can be improved through hippotherapy. Parents of seven autistic children who received both hippotherapy and other types of therapies were interviewed, and themes were identified and analysed from these interviews. Results indicated that hippotherapy had a positive effect on children's communication skills and participation in this type of complementary therapy was enjoyable for both children and parents. Finally, parents' narratives showed that hippotherapy had a positive impact on building their children's relationship with animals and other people, and positively affected their ability to acquire new skills.
