The influence of family socio-economic status on the 5th-grade pupil's decision to transfer to grammar school

Abstract:

V bakalářské práci se věnuji vlivům socio-ekonomického statusu rodiny na žáka a jeho vzdělávací dráhu. Cílem mého výzkumu je odpovědět na stanovenou hlavní výzkumnou otázku: Jaký vliv má socio-ekonomický status rodiny na rozhodnutí přestupu žáka 5. třídy na osmileté gymnázium? Práce zahrnuje teoretickou část, která obsahuje zasazení gymnázií do historického kontextu a zobrazuje statistické údaje žáků přestupujících na gymnázium. Zabývá se socio-ekonomickým statusem rodiny a jeho odvozování dle charakteristik zaměstnání a součástí je porovnání teorií kapitálů. Popisuje faktory, které v rámci postavení žáka ve společnosti v rozhodnutí o přestupu ovlivňují. V empirické části je popsán průběh výzkumu, metodologie, sběr a analýza dat. Zahrnuto je i šest specifických výzkumných otázek, kterým se věnuji ve výsledkové části. Výsledky představují souvislosti, ke kterým jsem na základě výzkumného šetření dospěla a dokazují, že socio-ekonomický status rodiny značně ovlivňuje žáka v jeho rozhodnutí o vzdělávací dráze.

Abstract:

In my bachelor's thesis I focus on the effects of family socio-economic status on students and their educational trajectory. The aim of my research is to answer the stated main research question: What is the impact of family socio-economic status on a 5th grade student's decision to transfer to an eight-year grammar school? The thesis includes a theoretical part that situates grammar schools in a historical context and presents statistical data of pupils transferring to grammar schools. It discusses the socio-economic status of the family and its derivation according to occupational characteristics. Includes a comparison of theories of capital and different perspectives on them. Describes the factors within a pupil's position in society that influence the decision to transfer to different school. The empirical part describes the research process, methodology, data collection and analysis. Also included are six specific research questions, which I address in the results section. The results present the context that I have arrived at from the research investigation and show that the socio-economic status of the family greatly influences a student's decision about their educational career.
