Language content of textbooks for learning French as a foreign language and the reference level A1.

Abstract:

Disertační práce je zaměřena na problematiku jazykového obsahu učebnic francouzského jazyka. V teoretické části práce jsou popsána teoretická východiska řešené problematiky (teorie učebnice, referenční nástroje pro výběr jazykového obsahu učebnic cizích jazyků, teorie osvojování cizího jazyka a výzkumy v oblasti gramatiky, slovní zásoby a jazykových funkcí, vybrané studie volby jazykového obsahu učebnic francouzštiny). Empirická část zahrnuje tři výzkumná šetření. Cílem prvního výzkumného šetření bylo určit soulad gramatických jevů určených k osvojení s popisem referenční úrovně komunikační jazykové kompetence A1. Cílem druhého výzkumného šetření bylo určit soulad mezi slovní zásobou určenou k osvojení a popisem referenční úrovně komunikační jazykové kompetence A1. Cílem třetího výzkumného šetření bylo určit soulad mezi jazykovými funkcemi určenými k osvojení a popisem referenční úrovně komunikační jazykové kompetence A1. Naším záměrem bylo rovněž zjistit, zda existují výraznější rozdíly mezi učebnicemi českého a zahraničního původu. K tomuto účelu jsme použili kvantitativní analýzu jazykového obsahu učebnic. Výzkumný vzorek tvořily tři soubory učebnic francouzského jazyka použitelné pro vzdělávací obor Další cizí jazyk na druhém stupni základních škol. Jako výzkumný nástroj jsme použili popisy referenčních úrovní pro francouzštinu. Výsledky výzkumu poukázaly na některé společné rysy s podobně zaměřenými kvalitativními studiemi uskutečněnými ve Francii, Německu a Velké Británii. Co se týče gramatiky, všechny analyzované učebnice se vyznačují velkou shodou s referenční úrovní komunikační kompetence A2, což je způsobeno především vystavováním žáků komplexním gramatickým paradigmatům. Pokud jde o výběr slovní zásoby, zkoumané učebnice přesahují do značné míry úroveň A1. Stejně tak u výběru jazykového materiálu pro realizaci jazykových funkcí dávají autoři často přednost komplexním jazykovým vyjádřením před užitím jednodušších výrazů, což může zvyšovat kognitivní náročnost učení. Uskutečněný výzkum rovněž odhalil jisté rozdíly mezi učebnicemi zahraniční provenience a českého původu, které kladou obecně na žáky o něco nižší nároky.

Abstract:

The thesis deals with the topic of language content of textbooks of French as a foreign language teaching. In the theoretical part of the thesis, theoretical concepts related to the topic are described (textbook theory, reference tools for the selection of language content of language textbooks, language acquisition theories and research in the domain of grammar, vocabulary and language functions, selected studies on the choice of language content of textbooks of French as a foreign language teaching). In the empirical part, the research is divided into three investigations. The first research aim was to investigate the correspondence between grammar intended to be acquired and the reference level of language proficiency A1. The second research aim was to investigate the correspondence between vocabulary intended to be acquired and the reference level of language proficiency A1. The third research aim was to investigate the correspondence between language functions intended to be acquired and the reference level of language proficiency A1. We also intended to determine the differences, if any, between the textbooks coming from Czech and foreign publishers. To fulfil these aims a quantitative analysis focusing on language content of textbooks was conducted. The research sample was comprised of three sets of French language textbooks used in the Czech lower secondary schools. As a research instrument we used the reference level descriptions for French. The results of language content analysis of investigated textbooks indicates some common features with similar qualitative studies carried out in France, Germany and Great Britain. Concerning the grammar, all the analyzed textbooks showed a high level of compliance with level of language proficiency A2 which is caused by exposing students to complex grammatical paradigms. Concerning the vocabulary, lot of overlaps of the reference level of language proficiency A1 was revealed. Likewise, in the choice of language functions, the authors often prefer complex expressions before their simple forms which may increase the cognitive complexity of tasks. The research indicated some differences between the textbooks coming from foreign and Czech publishers that do not put the students in such a high demand.
