Education of Patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zaměřuje na mapování informovanosti pacientů s diabetem mellitem 2. typu za účelem rozšíření jejich edukace. Teoretická část popisuje základní informace o diabetu mellitu, jeho rozdělení, symptomatologii, komplikace, cíle léčby, terapii a význam edukace. Výzkum potvrzuje, že edukace pacientů s diabetem mellitem 2. typu je klíčová pro zlepšení manažmentu tohoto onemocnění a prevenci jeho komplikací. Cílem praktické části bylo zjistit, jak jsou pacienti s diabetem 2. typu informováni o této nemoci a jaký je rozsah jejich znalostí. K tomuto účelu bylo provedeno kvantitativní dotazníkové šetření mezi 50 pacienty v diabetologickém centru XY v Praze. Výsledky ukázaly, že edukace pacientů s diabetem mellitem 2. typu je na dobré úrovni. Nicméně, zjištěná data rovněž naznačují, že mezi pacienty stále existují oblasti nízké úrovně povědomí o diabetu mellitu 2. typu, zejména v oblasti jeho komplikací. Tato práce podtrhuje důležitost edukace pacientů s diabetem mellitem 2. typu a poukazuje na potřebu dalšího zlepšování informovanosti pacientů o této nemoci.

Abstract:

This bachelor‘s thesis explores patients‘ awareness of diabetes mellitus type 2 in order to expand their education in management of their condition. The theoretical part describes basic information about diabetes mellitus, its classification, symptoms, complications, treatment goals, therapy, and the importance of education. Based on the literature, the research results clearly indicate that education is crucial for improving the management of this disease and preventing its complications. The aim of the practical part was to determine the surveyed respondents awareness of their condition and the extent of their knowledge of diabetes mellitus type 2. For this purpose, a quantitative questionnaire survey was conducted among patients in a selected diabetes center in Prague. The results showed that of 50 respondents with type 2 diabetes mellitus the majority was quite well-informed of their condition. However, the findings suggest that there are still areas of particularly low level of knowledge among patients of certain aspects of type 2 diabetes, especially as regarding its complications. This thesis emphasizes the importance of educating patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and highlights the need for further improvement of patient knowledge about this disease.
