Translation analysis of E. A. Poe’s The Fall of the House Usher

Anotace:

Tato Bakalářská práce se zabývá dvěma českými překlady povídky The Fall of the House Usher od E. A. Poa s důrazem na fráze, jejichž překlad se měnil v čase kvůli zachování atraktivnosti pro čtenáře a plnému pochopení textu na straně čtenáře. Praktická část se skládá z analýzy vybraných částí a zhodnocení jejich vhodnosti z pohledu významu a zachování stylu originálního díla. Vlastní překlad je uveden pro ilustraci dalších změn, kterými překlad v čase prochází.Teoretická část uvádí různé překadatelské postupy užité v daných překladech a rozebírá metody hodnocení kvality překladu.

Abstract:

This Bachelor thesis analyses two Czech translations of E. A. Poe’s The Fall of the House Usher with the emphasis on phrases of which the translation has changed throughout the time in order to become appealing and understandable for the reader. The practical part consists of the analysis of chosen phrases and the evaluation of their suitability in terms of the meaning and whether they respect the form of the original text. My own translation is presented to illustrate the shift a translation goes through when done at different times. The theoretical part discusses different translation approaches and describes methods used when assessing the quality of a translation.
