The Archetypal Approaches in The Talisman by Stephen King and Peter Straub

Abstract:

Cílem práce je v románu The Talisman autorů Petera Strauba a Stephena Kinga rozeznat archetypální koncepty, provést jejich rozbor a zjistit, zda-li román následuje tradiční mýtické postupy v literatuře. Pro stanovení všeobecného teoretického základu a zásadního pojmu „archetyp” jsou konzultovány literární slovníky, Platónova filosofie a teorie mýtu Carla Junga. Teoretická kapitola také představuje základní zdroje použité pro následující analýzu. Druhá část práce se věnuje analýze hlavních postav a přiřazuje jim obecně známé archetypy popsané Carlem Jungem, Vladimirem Proppem, Christopherem Voglerem, Carol Pearson a Josephem Campbellem v závislosti na jejich rolích a chování v románu jak všeobecně, tak vzhledem k ostatním hlavním postavám. Třetí část práce pak analyzuje interakce postav a jejich vývoj. Tato část také zasazuje analýzu do perspektivy tradiční mýtické struktury příběhu pojmenované „monomyth” a stanovené Josephem Campbellem. Stupně této struktury jsou postupně představeny a postavy a definující znaky jejich archetypů jsou rozpoznány v průběhu děje knihy. Tato metoda ve výsledku potvrzuje, že The Talisman je současným románem, který následuje tradiční mýtické postupy v literatuře.

Abstract:

The aim of the thesis is to recognize and analyse the archetypal concepts in a contemporary novel The Talisman by Peter Straub and Stephen King and to discover whether the novel is a part of the mythic literary tradition. In order to establish the general theoretical background and the essential term “archetype”, literary dictionaries, Plato’s philosophy and Carl Jung’s theories of myth are consulted. The theoretical chapter also introduces the essential sources used for the further analysis. The second part of the thesis analyses the main characters and assigns them common archetypes identified by Carl Jung, Vladimir Propp, Christopher Vogler, Carol Pearson and Joseph Campbell according to their roles and behaviour in the novel both in general and in the interactions with other main characters. The third part of the thesis then analyses the interactions of the characters and their development. This part also puts the analysis in the perspective of the traditional mythical story structure called “monomyth”, established by Joseph Campbell. Stages of the structure are gradually introduced and the characters and the defining features of their archetypes are recognized throughout the story. This method eventually presents The Talisman as a contemporary novel which follows the mythic literary tradition.
