Urban and rural air monitoring using pine needles.

Abstract:

Diploma thesis Urban and rural air monitoring using pine needles is focused on outdoor air biomonitoring which uses pine needles as a form of passive sample. This plant is very suitable bio-indicator because of high content of wax in the structure of needles, accumulation of lipophilic substances and high availability. It is the matrix suitable even for multi-year monitoring, because it is evergreen. And thus, provides information on the long-term variability. This diploma thesis focuses on sampling of needles from two tree species (Pinus nigra a Pinus sylvestris) from the urban (Brno) and rural (Košetice) areas, their analysis and evaluation of concentrations of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in the cut needles. In the theoretical part brief the description of persistent organic pollutants and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons is provided, together with important information on biomonitoring, the structure of needles and a brief overview of studies that used needles as a passive sampler. In the experimental part, the sampling and analytical methodology and research results are described.

Diplomová práce Monitoring městského a venkovského ovzduší pomocí borového jehličí je zaměřená na biomonitoring vnějšího ovzduší, který využívá jako formu pasívního vzorkování právě jehlice. Tahle matrice je velice vhodným rostlinným bioindikátorom z důvodu obsahu voskových vrstev v struktuře jehlic, akumulace lipofilních látek a vysoké dostupnosti. Je to matrice vhodná i k několikaletému monitoringu, protože se jedná o rostliny stále zelené, proto poskytující informace o dlouhodobých časových trendech. Předložená diplomová práce se zaměřuje na vzorkování jehlic z dvou druhů stromů (Pinus nigra a Pinus sylvestris) z městské oblasti (Brno) a z pozaďové lokality (Košetice), jejich analýzu a vyhodnocení koncentrací polycyklických aromatických uhlovodíků ve stříhaných jehlicích. V teoretické časti je v krátkosti uvedený popis perzistentních organických polutantů, polycyklických aromatických uhlovodíků, následně důležité informace o biomonitoringu, struktuře jehlic a stručný přehled studií, které využívaly jehlice jako pasívní vzorkovač. V praktické časti je popsaná metodika práce a výsledky provedeného výzkumu.
