Countryside against the cities? A geographical analysis of the Czech presidential elections in 2018.

Abstract:

Volby prezidenta v roce 2018 polarizovaly českou společnost. Cílem této práce bylo ověřit tezi, zda tato polarizace probíhala podél linie centrum – periferie, kdy proti sobě stáli ve druhém kole volby kandidát centra a kandidát periferie. Výzkumnou otázkou proto bylo, zda mapa volební podpory každého z obou kandidátů odpovídá mapám vymezujícím různé typy center, resp. periferií. K zodpovězení otázky byl zvolen kvantitativní postup. Proměnné, charakterizující různé aspekty centrality, resp. perifernosti, byly konfrontovány se závisle proměnnou podíl hlasů pro prezidentského kandidáta, a to nejprve metodou jednoduché a následně vícenásobné regresní analýzy. Ukázalo se, že proměnnou, která nejvíce vysvětluje variabilitu závisle proměnné (podíl hlasů pro některého z kandidátů), je průměrná cena bytu. Analýza prokázala větší vliv socioekonomických než sociokulturních proměnných, tj. že z hlediska volebního chování, aspoň při prezidentské volbě 2018, byla významnější geografická diferenciace ekonomická než kulturní.

Abstract:

Presidential elections in 2018 polarized a Czech society. The aim of this work was to verify the thesis whether this polarization took place along the center-periphery line, when the candidate of the center and the candidate of the periphery stood against each other in the second round. The research question was therefore whether the electoral support map of each of the two candidates corresponds to the maps defining the different types of centers or peripherals. A quantitative approach was used to answer the question. Variables characterizing different aspects of centres, resp. peripherals, the dependent variable proportion of votes for the presidential candidate was confronted with a simple and consequently multiple regression analysis. It turned out that the variable that most explains the variability of the dependent variable (the share of votes for one of the candidates) is the average price of the apartment. The analysis showed a greater influence of socio-economic than socio-cultural variables, so in a terms of electoral behavior, at least during the presidential election of 2018, the geographical differentiation was more economic than cultural.
