Juniperus communis dendroecology

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se zabývá dendrochronologií jako vědeckou disciplínou a aplikací dendrochronologie na dřevinu Juniperus communis - jalovec obecný. Předmětem zájmu je vliv okolního prostředí na dlouhověkost jalovce. V této bakalářské práci je shrnuta historie dendrochronologie a její subdisciplíny, technické postupy při výzkumu a samotný výzkum této dřeviny. K výzkumu byly vybrány dvě lokality poblíž zálivu sv. Vavřince v Kanadě. Tyto lokality byly popsány a zhodnoceny z hlediska přírodního prostředí. Na obou místech byly odebrány vzorky jalovce obecného a dále zkoumány v laboratoři univerzity J.E. Purkyně v Ústí nad Labem. Každý vzorek byl oskenován a změřen pomocí aplikace WinDendro. Díky tomuto postupu bylo zhodnoceno, jak staré jsou vzorky na každé z lokalit a jak jsou tyto dřeviny ovlivňovány vnějším prostředím. Při výzkumu bylo vyhodnoceno, že u vzorků, které byly odebrány na ostrově René Levasseur Island převládají starší keře, a to i přesto, že podmínky na této lokalitě nejsou pro jalovce plně optimální. Keře jalovců na ostrově žijí déle a díky šířce letokruhů by se dalo říct, že žijí skromnějším a pomalejším životem oproti keřům na pobřeží. Tato data poslouží k lepšímu porozumění růstu jalovce v měnících se klimatických podmínkách.

Abstract:

The bachelor thesis deals with dendrochronology as a scientific discipline and the application of dendrochronology to the Juniperus communis tree. The subject of interest is the influence of the surrounding environment on the longevity of the juniper. This bachelor's thesis summarizes the history of dendrochronology and its subdisciplines, technical procedures during research and the actual research of this tree species. Two localities near the bay of St. Laurel in Canada were chosen for this research. These localities were described and evaluated from the point of view of the natural environment. Juniper samples were taken at both locations and further examined in the laboratory of the university J.E. Purkyně in Ústí nad Labem. Each sample was scanned and measured using the programme WinDendro. Thanks to this procedure we evaluated how old the samples are at each of the locations and how these trees are affected by their environment. During the research, it was discovered, that the samples which were taken on René Levasseur Island, older bushes predominate, despite the fact that the conditions at this location are not completely suitable for junipers. Juniper bushes on the island live longer and thanks to the width of the tree ring we might say that they live modest and slower life compared to the bushes on the coast. These data will be used for better understanding of growth of Juniper during climate changes.
