Manufacturing in rural hinterlands of the old industrial regions

Abstract:

Staré průmyslové regiony představují diverzifikované průmyslové regiony s výraznou specializací na těžký průmysl. V důsledku celospolečenské transformace, která zasáhla střední a východní Evropu po roce 1989, byly staré průmyslové regiony postiženy poklesem výkonnosti regionálních ekonomik a zastaralostí svých klíčových struktur a odvětví. Z výše uvedených důvodů staré průmyslové regiony čelí transformačním a adaptačním výzvám, jejíchž cílem je přizpůsobení klíčových ekonomických, sociálních a fyzických struktur na soudobě požadované parametry, které jsou potřebné pro konkurenceschopnost územních jednotek. Především v důsledku procesu restrukturalizace dochází k přechodu od masové výroby k výrobě flexibilní a lokalizační rozhodnutí firem ovlivňuje minimalizace výrobních nákladů, které jsou ve venkovských oblastech nižší. Pro mnohé investory se venkov stává z hlediska lokalizace průmyslových podniků atraktivnější nežli město. Práce se věnuje rozmístění, zaměstnanosti, odvětvové struktuře a dodavatelsko-odběratelským vazbám firem zpracovatelského průmyslu, které jsou lokalizovány ve venkovských zázemích starých průmyslových regionů. Jako modelová území pro případovou studii byla vybrána venkovská zázemí Moravskoslezského kraje a Ústeckého kraje. Datová základna práce je postavena na standardizovaných rozhovorech s aktéry průmyslových firem a zpracování základních statistických dat.

Abstract:

The old industrial regions are diversified industrial regions with a strong specialization in the heavy industry. Because of the social transformation that hit Central and Eastern Europe after 1989, the old industrial regions were affected by a decline in the performance of regional economies and the obsolescence of their key structures and sectors. For the reasons above, the old industrial regions face transformational and adaptation challenges that aim at adapting key economic, social and physical structures to the currently required parameters that are needed for the competitiveness of territorial units. In particular, because of the restructuring process, the transition from mass production to flexible production and localized decisions by firms affect the minimization of production costs, which are lower in rural areas. Today, the industrial production situated in rural areas is growing and for many investors is countryside more attractive than city. My research is about manufacturing industry in rural hinterlands of the old industrial regions - the industry firms were analysed from several aspects: placement, employment, sectoral structure and supplier-customer linkages. The rural hinterlands situated in Moravian-Silesian Region and Ústí Region were selected for the research. Data sources are based on standardized interviews with important actors of industry firms and processing of statistical data.
