Perception of U.S. in Nicaragua

Abstract:

VELENSKÁ, S. Vnímání USA v Nikaragui Bakalářská práce. Brno: Mendelova univerzita v Brně, 2018.Práce je zaměřena na současné vnímání a postoje obyvatel Nikaraguy vůči USA. Skládá se ze dvou částí – teoretické a praktické. Teoretická část je vypracována na základě odborné literatury, týkající se zejména historie Nikaraguy a výzkumu médií, jak nikaragujských, tak amerických. Součástí praktické části je metodologie a především prezentace výsledků dotazníkového šetření. Dotazníky vyplňovali respondenti v areálu univerzit, v parcích, na náměstích a v dalších částech měst, kde se soustředilo větší množství lidí.Z výzkumu vyplynulo, že percepce USA je v porovnání s vybranými státy Evropy, Asie a Latisnké Ameriky mírně negativní. Názory byly často ovlivněny médii,osobními zkušenostmi a zkušenostmi předávanými z generace na generaci. Ovšem vzhledem k tomu, že občanská válka probíhala v Nikaragui ještě v 80. letech 20. století, by se dalo očekávat, že historické události budou hrát v kontextu vztahů mezi Nikaraguou a USA významnější roli, než z výzkumu vyplynulo.Do určité míry překvapující výsledek výzkumu je negativnější vnímání USA ze strany žen ve srovnání s mužskou percepcí. Tento výstup je v kontrastu s výzkumem Development of a Wartime Stressor Scale for Women, který je mimo jiné zaměřen na vnímání Spojených států mezi ženami ve Vietnamu. Dle tohoto výzkumu pohlaví vliv na percepci USA nemá, naopak ženy zaujímají ve srovnání s muži k USA mírně pozitivnější postoje. (Wolfe a kol., 1993)Na druhou stranu mezi skutečnosti, které se daly předpokládat, patří nejnegativnější vnímání respondentů nejstarší věkové kategorie, kteří mají se Sandinistickou revolucí osobní zkušenost.

VELENSKÁ, S. Perception of U.S. in Nicaragua Bachelor thesis. Brno: Mendel university in Brno, 2018.This thesis focuses on the current perceptions and attitudes of the Nicaraguans towards USA. It consists of two parts – theoretical and practical. The theoretical part is based on the academic literature which deals with the Nicaraguan history and research of both, Nicaraguan and American media. Methodology and presentation of the results gathered via a questionnaire are also an important part of the theoretical part. The questionnaires were completed by the respondents at the University Campuses, at work places, town squares and other city locations with large concentration of people.Based on the gathered and evaluated results, the conclusion was that the perception of USA is slightly negative, compared to some other European, Asian and Latin America countries. The opinions were often influenced by media, personal experience and experience that have been passed on from previous generations. However, considering the fact that the civil war was besetting Nicaragua still in 1980s, it would be a plausible hypothesis to claim that such a historical event would play a much greater role in the relationship between Nicaragua and USA than was actually the case.In terms of results, it is fairly surprising that USA seems to be more negatively perceived by women population, rather than by men population of the respondents. This result is in contrast with the research of Development of a Wartime Stressor Scale for Women which, among else, focused on the perception of USA among Vietnamese women. According to that research, the gender does not influence the perception of USA. On the contrary, women seem to assume slightly more positive attitudes towards USA than men. (Wolfe a kol., 1993)On the other hand, one of the results that could have been predicted was a more negative perception of the respondents who belong to the oldest age category and experienced therefore the Sandinista revolution in person.
