Stress and its Impact on Health

Abstract:

Tématem bakalářské práce je Stres a jeho vliv na zdraví. Práce je rozdělena do dvou částí, a to na část teoretickou a na část praktickou. Část teoretická se v úvodu zabývá historií, definicemi a dělením stresu. Dále jsou v práci popsána jednotlivá onemocnění a poruchy, která bývají v literatuře často spojována se stresem. Praktická část je průzkumová a byla vedena pomocí dotazníkového šetření mezi studenty Vysoké školy zdravotnické, o. p. s. (VŠZ). Hlavním cílem praktické části bylo zjistit, zda stres ovlivňuje jejich zdraví a pokud ano, jakým způsobem se účinky stresu na jejich zdraví projevily. Dalším cílem bylo zjistit, příčiny, kvůli kterým nejčastěji respondenti stres pociťují. Shromážděná data jsou v praktické části znázorněna pomocí grafů a tabulek. V praktické části byly použity dohromady tři dotazníky. Dva standardizované dotazníky zkoumající a) Míru stresu respondentů How stressed are you (Jak hodně se cítíte ve stresu) a b) Zvládání stresu ISMA Stress Questionnaire a rovněž c) jeden vlastní dotazník. Do průzkumu se zapojilo 150 respondentů čtyř studijních programů VŠZ, tj. všeobecné ošetřovatelství (40 %), zdravotnický záchranář (40 %), porodní asistence (10 %) a fyzioterapie (10 %). Dvě třetiny (67 %) průzkumného souboru tvořily ženy. Pociťovaný stres uvedlo ve vlastním dotazníku 107 studentů (71 %) a jako nejčastější příčiny byly uváděny studium 32 %, rodinné/partnerské vztahy 23 % a finanční těžkosti 20 %. Mezi nejčastějšími dopady stresu na zdraví respondentů byly uváděny poruchy spánku 27 %, onemocnění trávicího traktu 14 %, poruchy příjmu potravy 13 % a psychická onemocnění 12 %. Ve standardizovaném dotazníku a) Míry stresu dosáhlo výsledku nízký/střední stupeň stresu 55 % a vysoký stupeň stresu 22 % respondentů, tj. 77 % průzkumného souboru. Téměř polovina vykazovala velkou náchylnost ke stresu v dotazníku Zvládání stresu ISMA. Výsledky statistické analýzy prokázaly, že vliv stresu na zdravotní stav respondentů je závislý na pohlaví respondentů, zatímco závislost na formě studia a věku prokázána nebyla. Závěrem lze konstatovat, že v tomto průzkumu více jak dvěma třetinám respondentů způsobil stres zdravotní potíže. Negativní vliv stresu se může projevit rovněž oslabením kognitivních schopností studentů a tím negativně ovlivnit jejich studijní výsledky, míru jejich společenské angažovanosti a empatie, která je zásadní pro jejich uspokojivý pracovní výkon a v důsledku tohoto může stres zvýšit riziko pro pacienty. Celospolečenský a ekonomický dopad stresu na studenty se může projevit nedokončením studia, nenastoupením do zdravotnické profese po promoci či později častou fluktuací pracovníků ve zdravotnictví. Domníváme se proto, že vliv stresu na zdraví studentů je problémem zasluhující pozornost odborné společnosti.

Abstract:

The topic of the bachelor thesis is Stress and its impact on health. The thesis is divided into two parts, namely the theoretical part and the practical part. The theoretical part begins with an introduction addressing the history, definitions, and classification of stress. Furthermore, the thesis discusses various diseases and disorders commonly associated with stress in the literature. The practical part of the study consisted of a survey conducted through questionnaire among students of the Medical College. The main aim of the practical section was to ascertain whether stress affects their health and if so, how the effects of stress manifest on their health. Another objective was to identify the most common causes for which respondents experience stress. The collected data is presented in the practical section through graphs and tables. Three questionnaires were employed in total: two standardized questionnaires examining a) the level of stress among respondents ("How stressed are you?") and b) the management of stress (ISMA Stress Questionnaire), as well as c) one custom-made questionnaire. A total of 150 respondents from four study programs at UHS participated in the survey: general nursing (40 %), paramedics (40 %), midwifery (10 %), and physiotherapy (10 %). Two-thirds (67 %) of the surveyed group were women. Perceived stress was reported by 107 students (71 %) in their own questionnaire, with the most common causes being academic pressure (32 %), family/partner relationships (23 %), and financial difficulties (20 %). Among the most frequently cited health impacts of stress on respondents were sleep disorders (27 %), gastrointestinal disorders (14 %), eating disorders (13 %), and mental illnesses (12 %). In the standardized stress questionnaire, 55 % of respondents reported a low to moderate level of stress, and 22 % reported a high level of stress, totaling 77 % of the surveyed group. Nearly half exhibited a high susceptibility to stress in the ISMA Stress Management Questionnaire. The results of statistical analysis demonstrated that the influence of stress on the health status of respondents is dependent on respondents' gender, while no correlation was found with the form of study or age. In conclusion, it can be stated that stress caused health problems for more than two-thirds of the respondents in this survey. The negative impact of stress may also manifest in the impairment of students' cognitive abilities, negatively affecting their academic performance, level of social engagement, and empathy, which is crucial for their satisfactory professional performance and, consequently, may increase the risk for patients. The societal and economic impact of stress on students may result in incomplete studies, failure to enter the healthcare profession after graduation, or frequent turnover of healthcare workers later on. Therefore, we believe that the influence of stress on students' health is a problem deserving attention from the professional community.
