Hormonal Contraception and Mate Choice

Abstract:

Tématem této diplomové práce je potenciální vztah užívání hormonální antikoncepce s výběrem partnera u člověka. Podle předchozích studií by hormonální antikoncepce mohla měnit přirozené kognitivní a behaviorální mechanismy, které se uplatňují při výběru partnera. Jiná studie naznačuje, že zjištěné odlišnosti v partnerských preferencích i reálném výběru partnera mohou být důsledkem předchozích biologických rozdílů mezi skupinami žen a ne vlivem antikoncepce samotné. Cílem empirické studie bylo zjistit, zda se nějak liší sexuální dimorfismus v obličeji a obličejová podobnost heterosexuálních partnerů mezi páry, kde žena v době vzniku užívala kombinovanou hormonální antikoncepci a páry, kde ji neužívala (tj. měla přirozený menstruační cyklus). Materiál představoval soubor standardizovaných fotografií 89 partnerských párů, z toho 43 párů obsahovala skupina, ve které ženy v době vytvoření páru s aktuálními partnery užívaly hormonální antikoncepci (skupina s HA), a 46 párů obsahovala skupina, ve kterých nikoliv (skupina bez HA). Obličeje na fotografiích byly měřeny a analyzovány metodami tradiční a geometrické morfometrie. Sledovala jsem obličejový dimorfismus vybraných velikostních a tvarových znaků znaků v obou skupinách, jak se mezi oběma skupinami liší sexuální dimorfismus ve tvaru a velikosti obličeje, a jak se mezi skupinami liší nepodobnost obličeje partnerů v párech. Z výsledků vyplývá statisticky významný dimorfismus v celkovém tvaru obličeje ve skupině s HA, avšak nikoliv ve skupině bez HA. Muži skupiny bez HA měli ovšem celkově větší obličej a větší hodnoty výšky dolní třetiny obličeje než muži skupiny s HA. Partneři skupiny s HA si ale byli vzájemně podobnější v některých dílčích vlastnostech tvaru obličeje (relativní výška horního rtu, relativní výška umístění nosního hrotu a celková relativní délka nosního hřbetu). Výsledky naznačují určité biologické rozdíly mezi páry skupiny s HA a skupiny bez HA, které souvisí především s rozdíly mezi obličeji mužů obou skupin. V práci jsou dále diskutovány možné interpretace zjištěných výsledků z hlediska dnešních teorií výběru partnera u člověka.

Abstract:

The theme of this thesis is to observe a potential relationship between taking hormonal contraception and mate choice in humans. According to previous studies, natural cognitive and behavioral mechanisms of mate choice can be altered by taking hormonal contraception. Another study suggests that mate selection choices can be the result of pre-existing biological differences between groups of females using and not using hormonal contraception and not the result of taking hormonal contraception alone. The aim of this empirical study was to determine whether sexual dimorphism in the face and facial resemblance of partners in heterosexual couples differs between couples, in which the female was using combined hormonal contraception at the beginning of the relationship, and couples, in which the female was not using hormonal contraception. The material consisted of standardized photographs of 89 couples of which 43 couples, where woman was using hormonal contraception at the beginning of the relationship (group with CC), and 46 couples, where woman was not using hormonal contraception (group without CC). Faces on images were measured and analyzed using traditional and geometric morphometrics methods. In both groups, I looked at the intergroup facial dimorphism of selected size and shape features. Furthermore, I studied the differences between groups in sexual dimorphism of shape and size of the face, and the differences between groups in the facial resemblance between partners. The results show a statistically significant dimorphism in the overall shape of the face in the group with CC, but not in the without CC group. Males in the without CC group had larger faces and greater length values of the lower third of the face than males in the with CC group. Partners in the with CC group were more similar to each other in some aspects of the face (relative height of the upper lip, relative height of the placement of the nose tip and the overall relative length of the nose ridge). The results indicate certain biological differences between couples of the two groups, which are mainly related to the differences in male faces. Possible interpretations of the discovered patterns are also discussed in light of current theories on mate selection in humans.
