Depressivity in Early Adolescence

Abstract:

Hlavním cílem práce bylo blíže prozkoumat výskyt a míru depresivity u dětí staršího školního věku. Dalším dílčím cílem bylo ověřit vztahy mezi depresivitou a rizikovými faktory, které mohou její míru zvyšovat. Konkrétně jsme se zaměřili na věkové rozdíly, úroveň sebehodnocení dítěte, vztahy v rodině a genderové rozdíly v míře depresivity. Pro uvedený výzkumný záměr byl zvolen kvantitativní výzkumný design, jehož podkladem je testová baterie, která obsahovala dotazník zjišťující demografické údaje týkající se respondentů, vztahy v rodině a obsahující dvě škály: Sebeposuzovací škála depresivity pro děti (Children´s Depression Inventory , CDI) a Škála uvědomování si vlastních schopností pro děti (Perceived Competence Scale for Children ; PCSC). Výzkumný soubor pro tuto diplomovou práci tvořilo 1291 respondentů ve věku od 11 do 16 let. V našem výzkumu bylo na základě sebeposouzení označeno 232 (18%) respondentů s vysokou mírou depresivity. Hraniční hodnoty 20 bodů dosáhlo 167 (12,9 %) dívek a 65 (5 %) chlapců. Pokud se zaměříme na interpretaci výsledků v jednotlivých subškalách, tak mírné obtíže se projevují u 98 (7, 6 %) dívek a 65 (5 %) chlapců, výrazná depresivita u 89 (6, 9 %) dívek a 39 (3 %) chlapců. Dívky dosahovaly nejvyšších hodnot v subškále anhedonie, chlapci naproti tomu v subškále nevýkonnost. Prokázali jsme, že u dívek je statisticky významně vyšší míra depresivity než u chlapců. Tyto rozdíly se ovšem nepotvrzují při výrazných projevech depresivity. Nebyl nalezen statisticky významný vztah mezi výskytem depresivity a věkem. Prokázali jsme, že mezi sebehodnocením dítěte a mírou depresivity existuje negativní vztah. Největší vliv na depresivitu dětí měla celková sebeúcta, čím menší je sebeúcta dítěte, tím roste míra depresivity. U chlapců i dívek se ukázaly nejvýznamnější korelace mezi jednotlivými subškálami CDI a PCSC nevýkonnost a školní dovednosti. S pomocí regresní analýzy jsme prokázaly, že nejvýznamnějším prediktorem rozvoje depresivity je nízká sebeúcta dítěte. U chlapců má významnou predikční hodnotu na rozdíl od dívek také vztah s matkou. Domníváme se, že je třeba věnovat období staršího školního věku zvýšenou pozornost, včetně cílených preventivních programů.

Abstract:

The main objective of the present study was to closely examine the incidence and rate of depression in early adolescence. Another partial objective was to verify the relationship between depressivity and risk factors that may increase the rate of depressivity. Specifically, we focused on differences in age, level of self-evaluation, family relationships and gender differences in depressivity rate. For this research project was chosen quantitative research design, whose basis is a test battery that included a questionnaire investigating demographic data on the respondents, family relationships , and containing two scales: Children 's Depression Inventory (CDI ) and Perceived Competence Scale for children (PCSC ) . The sample for this thesis consisted of 1,291 respondents aged 11 to 16 years. In our research was based on self-assessment identified 232 (18%) of respondents with high levels of depressivity. Cut-off 20 points reached 167 (12.9 %) girls and 65 (5%) boys. If we focus on the interpretation of the results in the individual subscales, then moderate difficulties are manifested on 98 (7, 6 %) girls and 65 (5%) boys, a significant depressivity on 89 (6, 9%) girls and 39 (3%) boys. Girls peaked in anhedonia subscale, while boys in the ineffectiveness subscale. We have shown that girls’ depressivity rate is statistically significantly higher than boys´. These differences, however, do not confirm with significant manifestations of depressivity. There was no statistically significant relationship between the incidence of depressivity and age. We have shown that there is a negative relationship between the self-evaluation of the child and the level of depressivity. The biggest influence on children´s depressivity had total self-esteem, the lower the self-esteem of the child, thereby increasing the rate of depression. For boys and girls proved to be the most significant correlations among the subscales of CDI and PCSC ineffectiveness and school skills. Using regression analysis, we have shown that the most important predictor for the development of depression is low self-evaluation of the child. In case of boys there is significant predictive value in a relationship with the mother, unlike in case of girls. We believe that there should be given increased attention to the children in early adolescence, including targeted prevention programs.
