The communication Process in Julius Zeyer`s correspondence

Abstract:

Dizertační práce zkoumá komunikační proces v korespondenci Julia Zeyera. Zpracovává jej z pohledu textové lingvistiky, teorie komunikace a využívá poznatků z psychologie umění, psychologie komunikace a psychologie sociální. Korespondence Julia Zeyera, jednoho z nejvýznamnějších představitelů české literatury 2. poloviny 19. století, je jedním z nejbohatších epistolografických souborů. Byla vydávána bezprostředně po básníkově smrti v časopisech a novinách a od roku 1919 i v knižních edicích. Zeyerovi adresáti se rekrutují nejen z různých oblastí umění: literatury (Zeyer-Sládek, Ve stínu Orfea), malířství (Přátelství básníka a malířky – Vzájemná korespondence Julia Zeyera a Zdenky Braunerové), sochařství (Básník a sochař - Korespondence Julia Zeyera a Františka Bílka) a architektury (Zeyerovy dopisy Josefu Fantovi), ale pokrývají i oblast soukromou (Dopisy Karle Heinrichové). Životopisci a vykladači využívali korespondenci zejména jako pramene životopisných a literárněhistorických informací. Korespondenci Julia Zeyera nebyla z hlediska teorie komunikace dosud věnována pozornost. Osobní dopis jako žánr osciluje mezi stylem epistolografickým a stylem uměleckým. Pro Julia Zeyera to platí dvojnásob, neboť v jeho dopisech najdeme prvky stylu sdělovacího, korespondenčního i uměleckého. Dopis byl pro něj často náhradou mluvené komunikace. Jedním z hlavních témat práce je ztvárnění zobrazované skutečnosti. Julius Zeyer byl velkým cestovatelem, předmětem analýzy byly jeho dopisy z Paříže, Bretaně, Říma, Florencie atd. Pro jeho dopisy je typický zřetel na předjímaného adresáta; jedna událost je ztvárněna v komunikátech určených různým adresátům rozdílným způsobem (zkáza Karlova mostu, smrt básníka Mokrého). Z výše uvedených důvodů se dizertační práce věnuje sebestylizaci subjektu narátora/produktora a stylizaci subjektu adresáta/receptora. Byla provedena komplexní analýza komunikačního procesu v písemném komunikátu – osobním dopise. Na konkrétních ukázkách jsme zdokumentovali druhy výpovědních komunikačních funkcí v zeyerovské korespondenci. Věnovali jsme se tématům, jež přesahují do teorie překladu a mytopoetiky, a to ztvárnění obrazu města v korespondenci Julia Zeyera a fenoménu cizojazyčnosti v Zeyerových dopisech. Cílem dizertační práce nebylo jen popisovat výše uvedené aspekty jednoho rozsáhlého souboru dopisů, ale i nastínit další související témata, která korespondence výjimečné osobnosti přesahující český kulturní prostor nabízí. Julius Zeyer nebyl pouze autorem českým, nýbrž v pravém slova smyslu evropským.

Abstract:

The aim of the dissertation was, among others, to show a number of interconnected themes and topics offered to explore when we deal with the correspondence of outstanding personalities like Julius Zeyer was – a truly European poet and writer. The collection of letters written by Julius Zeyer, one of the most significant figures of Czech literature of the second half of the 19th century represents an extremely rich epistolographic unit. Its publication in magazines and newspapers started right after the poet’s decease, since 1919 appears in books as well. Zeyer addresses a numerous group of art-oriented contemporaries engaged in writing (J.V. Sládek ( Zeyer-Sládek ), painting (see A Friendship between a Poet and a Painter: Julius Zeyer and Zdenka Braunerová in their Letters), sculpture (see A Poet and a Sculptor: Letters of Julius Zeyer and František Bílek) and architecture (Zeyer´s Letters to Josef Fanta). The letters are of a private nature as well (see Letters to Karla Heinrichová). The ample collection of letters has been by far used as a source of biographical, literary and historical data. However, the letters of Julius Zeyer have not been studied from the perspective of theory of communication yet. The dissertation explores the communication process contained in the letters. It handles the pieces of writing from the angles of textual linguistics, theory of communication, it simultaneously exploits arts psychology, communication psychology and social psychology. In terms of genre, this type of personal letters may be placed somewhere between the epistolographic and art styles. As far as Julius Zeyer´s work is concerned it applies to him twice as much since in his letters we find the elements of different styles such as informative, correspondence and art styles. Frequently he understood letters as substitutes for oral communication. Him being a great traveller made us analyse his letters from Paris, Bretany, Rome and Florence etc. Typicall what you find in this letters is the focus on the alleged addressee, one depicted reality is captured in a variety of ways. Therefore in our work we explore the self-representation of the narrator as well as the representation and presentation of the addressee/receiver. We have undertaken an extensive and complex analysis of the communication process in the written pieces, i.e. personal letters. Using carefully select samples we have documented evidence on the various kinds of communication functions in the correspondence of Zeyer´s. We have concentrated on issues which involved (1) theory of translation and mytopoetics, namely the Representation of city life, and at the same time (2) foreign language expressions in Zeyer´s correspondence.
