Doing Gender in a TV Show "You Are Beautiful Naked"

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá analýzou dělání genderu v televizním pořadu Nahá jsi krásná, s důrazem na jeho interakční charakter. Soustředí se také na souvislost genderu a diskurzu mýtu krásy. Pořad cílí na ženskou populaci a avizuje nastolení revoluce v uvažování žen. Zajímá mě proto, jakým způsobem se v jeho pojetí revoluce dělá gender, jakým způsobem vnímá tělo, respektive maskulinitu a femininitu. Protože se pořad výrazně zaměřuje na prezentaci těla v běžném životě, bude pro mou analýzu tělo jedním z nejzákladnějších indikátorů. Právě tělo je totiž jedním z nejpodstatnějších znaků, na jejichž základě konstruujeme gender. Teoretickým východiskem práce je sociální konstruktivismus, respektive intepretativní paradigma. Přístupy West a Zimmerman (doing gender), Kessler a McKenna (gender attribution) a Goffman (gender display) definují prostor pro kvalitativní analýzu televizní reality show. Sama analýza pořadu odhaluje důležitou úlohu mýtu krásy. Scénář pořadu se vůči němu vymezuje tím, že odmítá jakékoliv zásahy do těla žen (diety), nicméně i přesto podléhá jeho silnému diskurzu. Poselství pořadu je tedy ambivalentní. Ačkoliv pořad zvyšuje ženám sebevědomí a nazývá je krásnými, zároveň je učí určité části těl maskovat. Pořad Nahá jsi krásná konstruuje praktiky, kterými učí ženy (participující v pořadu i divačky) předvádět a dělat gender tak, aby odpovídal stereotypnímu očekávání společnosti.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis deals with analysis of doing gender in TV show You are beautiful naked emphasising on its interactional character. It focuses also on connection of gender and the beauty myth. TV show is assigned to all women and it advises the revolution in women's thinking. Therefore, I focus on the way of how gender is done in this concept of revolution, and also how the revolution perceives the body, or more precisely, masculinity and femininity. The body is one of the most constitutive indicators in my analysis, because of the fact that TV show itself is focused on presentation of the body in everyday life. The body is one of the most important signs in construction of gender. Theoretical objectives of the work come from social constructivism, more precisely, from interpretative paradigm. The approaches of West and Zimmerman (doing gender), Kessler and McKenna (gender attribution) and Goffman (gender display) define an area for qualitative analysis of TV reality show. The analysis itself shows the importance of the beauty myth. TV show stands ahead of beauty myth by refusing any interference to women’s bodies (diets), anyhow it comes under the beauty myth discursus. Thus, the mission of the TV show is ambivalent. Although the TV show increases the self-esteem of women by telling them that they are beautiful, it also teaches them to mask some parts of their bodies. The TV show You are beautiful naked constructs practices that teach women (participating in the show and spectatress) how to display and do gender to meet stereotypical expectations of society.
